When you think of San Diego culture, it's likely that pristine beaches, fish tacos, the Padres, and Comic-Con come to mind. Our thought was, why not leverage popular culture to address a pressing social issue? We launched the Hunger Action hero Art Contest in collaboration with the Comic-Con Museum to do just that. Now, years later, the campaign has morphed yet again with the launch of "Hunger Action Heroes Unite!," a comic book to educate young readers about the opportunity of food rescue for hunger relief in a new and engaging way. This year, Dana Williams, our director of marketing & communications, will be on a panel at Comic-Con International to discuss her idea for the contest and subsequent book alongside the book's author, artist, and the education consultant helping to bring the book's message to more kids. If you're going to Comic-Con, join us! #nonprofit #hungerrelief #foodrescue #giveback #comiccon #feedingamerica #hungeractionheroes

OUT NOW: On our latest episode (the last before we take a break over the summer) we have a fascinating conversation about how to understand and measure generosity around the world, with Pamala Wiepking, Stead Family Chair in International Philanthropy at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. https://lnkd.in/eGRHGzat Including: -Is “philanthropy” a helpful word in a global context? -Is there any danger that if we broaden our definitions of generosity too far in our efforts to make them more universal, they lose meaning? -Is the role of philanthropy academics simply to observe and analyse giving and generosity, or to encourage it? -Are we in the midst of a "generosity crisis", or is the apparent decline in giving in places like the US, the UK and the Netherlands merely a reflection of the fact that the way we measure generosity has failed to evolve in step with how people actually choose to give?

Happy Public Media Giving Days! We asked artist Justice Dwight, their favorite thing about public media, here's what they had to say! "I think my favorite thing about public media is the storytelling aspect. I learn about a variety of people, which is always interesting. The more stories that are told the more others are encouraged to share their own narratives. Public media has shaped my life in a few different ways. I think for me it’s really a great way to receive information. What you do with the information you receive is up to you. I feel positively influenced and inspired especially when I see spotlights on positive things happening in our community and it further pushes me to want to be involved. People should support public media because it’s ultimately a tool that you can utilize any way you see fit. I personally think it keeps us connected through accurate storytelling and through that we are all learning and growing." Today, January 4th, is World Braille Day! This day marks the birthday of Louis Braille, the inventor of the incredible tactile writing system that empowers and connects millions of blind and visually impaired individuals around the world. Braille is more than just a code of raised dots; it's a gateway to literacy, independence, and equal participation in society. It allows individuals who are blind or visually impaired to read and write, access information, pursue education, and even express themselves creatively. Here are some ways you can celebrate World Braille Day: 💠 Learn more about Braille: Take some time to understand the basics of Braille and how it works. There are many great resources available online and in libraries. 💠 Spread awareness: Share information about World Braille Day on your social media platforms and encourage others to learn more. 💠 Support organizations: Donate to organizations that work to advance Braille literacy and provide resources for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. 💠 Engage with the community: Connect with individuals who are blind or visually impaired and learn about their experiences with Braille. You can attend events, join online communities, or simply strike up a conversation with someone who uses Braille. Let's create a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their sight.

Day 5 of our 7-day challenge on reflections for a happier life: "How do you feel when you say no to someone's request?" Sometimes we say yes to requests- to take on a new project at work, to organize the school fundraiser, to volunteer for an organization - even when we don't have capacity, time, or interest to do so. Saying no can show good boundaries and strong self-care. But how do you feel when you say no? Guilt? Embarrassment? (Relief?) Grab a pen and a beautiful journal or notepad and write out what you feel when you say no to someone's request. Then consider why you feel that way, and give yourself permission to re-write the story and focus on your boundaries. It's OK to say no to someone's request.

This year has gotten off to a slow start. Anyone else? Don't get me wrong...I don't mind it. It's nice to ease slowly in to a new year. To spend some time organizing papers, files, my thoughts, everything. I'll even be sending out my newsletter a week later than normal (if you were tracking this). What hasn't been slow? Writing the newsletter. The bulk of it flew out of my fingers on to my phone late last night in about five minutes. I'll be adding some things and editing before it goes out on Friday, but otherwise, it's mainly written. That's what I love about the current rendition of my newsletter. It's quick for me to write. And hopefully quick for you to read. The processing and implementation may take longer, but that's to be expected. If you'd like a focused question (or two or more) in your inbox each month to get you thinking about your giving, sign up today! #philanthropy #giving #philanthropyadvising #philanthropyadvisor https://lnkd.in/gKC_R-th

Friends! Fundraisers (sometimes those are the same thing 😅). I know you get a billion "fill out survey" asks a day so 💯 no sweat if it's a pass; but I have one more. I'm trying to understand how charities working in different impact areas "should" be considered / evaluated on a fairly quick or cursory basis (ie at an LOI stage). For example, how might a charity working in environmental conservation be considered, what metrics might a "good" mental health charity be evaluated on? Are there common questions? What things about your area of impact, that you think funders should be aware of when considering granting to a [IMPACT type] charity? For your time, I’d be happy to shoot you over a $5 Starbucks Card. From animals to activism, mental health to music, it is very much appreciated 🙏🏻. https://lnkd.in/ghihPZGy
