Happy World Environment Day! 🌍 Today, we celebrate our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our planet. Last month was impactful! With support from our partners Earth Animal and Fera Pets, Inc. , we organized a cleanup and awareness building effort in Buenaventura, a coastal town in Colombia which is also an estuary of the Pacific Ocean. Buenaventura - as a remote community with limited access - lacks waste infrastructure, and faces a severe plastic pollution problem. This risks harming marine life and local livelihoods. This is particularly significant, as renowned Humpback Whale breeding grounds lie just off Buenaventura's Pacific Coast. Thanks to Earth Animal and Fera Pets, along with our impact partner Ecoworks and dedicated volunteers, we cleaned up La Barra and Juan Chaco beaches, recovering nearly 50,000lbs of waste that would have otherwise washed out into the ocean. This effort shows how much we can achieve when we work together as a community. And there's more. While clean-ups provide one-off removal of legacy plastic waste, rePurpose Global has established a system to intercept plastic waste from Buenaventura's beaches that ensures it goes for sorting and recycling. By involving local communities, we're also creating new job opportunities, and supporting waste worker livelihoods. 🐢 When and why? Since 2000, International Turtle Day has been celebrated annually on 23rd May. It serves as a yearly reminder to appreciate and protect turtles and tortoises and their habitats, which are being destroyed due to our environmental impact, especially plastic pollution. 🐢 The plastic problem Did you know that it can take up to 400 years for a single plastic bag to degrade? To discover just how far this plastic problem stretches, the European INDICIT (Indicator Impact Turtle) project has been tracking the presence of plastic in sea turtles’ digestive systems for nearly two years. According to their findings, 85% of marine turtles in France, Italy and Spain have already ingested plastic waste, severely impacting their health. This percentage shot to 100% in the French Mediterranean. Greenpeace has also stated that approximately 267 animal species worldwide regularly ingest plastic. Of this number, 86% of marine turtles are affected, 44% of bird species, and 43% of marine mammals. 🐢 Join Compostable in fighting plastic Who knew that tossing used bags into the soil could actually help save the planet? This year, the theme is 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗩𝗦 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀. 💬 The organising movement behind Earth Day: EARTHDAY.ORG is committed to engaging both policymakers and the general public, demanding, for example, a 60% decrease in plastic pollution by 2040. 🍀 Sustainability is a focal point in EAZA’s 2021-2025 Strategic Plan. The globally commemorated #EarthHour will take in Manila this year, set on March 23. As announced by World Wildlife Foundation, this event will be held at the Kartilya ng Katipunan, beside the Manila City Hall. This year Earth Hour in the Philippines’ focus is on addressing plastic pollution as it is one of the most pressing concerns for our country and a public health issue. We generate 2 million tonnes of plastic waste in the Philippines every year, only 9% is recycled, and 35% leaks out into the open environment. As we are an archipelago of 7,640 islands, the damage caused by plastic pollution to our environment is magnified. The most recent scientific studies have found that the planet's deteriorating biodiversity and the fast changing climate are the two biggest challenges humanity confronts. There is a need to act quickly and decisively with new policies and systemic changes that promote renewable energy, transition to a circular economy, improving sustainable agriculture and fisheries, and increasing habitat restoration efforts. Plastics that end up in the ocean are recognized as affecting the ocean’s carbon absorption capacity and also becomes a risk factor for human health due to ingestion by fishing species. Out of all the generated solid waste in the Philippines, plastic waste is the third largest with 2,150,000 tonnes in 2019 alone. Unfortunately, only 9% of these plastics are recycled due to insufficient capacity to recycle the high-value plastics. WWF-Philippines partners with governments, cities, businesses, communities, civil-society organizations, the academe, and individuals in order to find and implement solutions to the plastics problem. Plastics are virtually at every level of human society and therefore requires everyone’s concerted efforts. In our own little ways, let's participate and contribute to the upcoming Earth Hour. Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets that can create enormous problems for marine ecosystems. Billions of nurdles are produced each year and are easily spilled during manufacturing or transport. Because they are difficult to clean, they often wash into streams and oceans where they are consumed by wildlife. Fidra’s #GreatGlobalNurdleHunt is an excellent way to tackle this pervasive form of plastic pollution. Groups around the world not only remove nurdles from their local environment, but they also contribute to research and raising awareness. A Rocha hosts #NurdleHunts in The USA, Kenya and Portugal, where we see children, interns, scientists and dedicated community members on their hands and knees in the sand, searching for nurdles. We are thrilled to announce that the Full Circle Belize project has been awarded a grant from the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future!   For the next 27 months, we will be entering a new phase named "Biodiversity Guardians against Plastic Pollution".   Expanding our reach, we are now serving two additional communities: Riversdale and Seine Bight, in addition to the other eight communities actively participating in our journey: Belmopan City, Camalote, Cotton Tree, Teakettle, Roaring Creek, Ontario, Unitedville, Armenia.   The overall objective of this phase is to enhance marine biodiversity and ecosystems by empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to mitigate plastic waste pollution. We aim to become a sustainable business by the end of 2025, enhancing plastic waste collection and re-manufacturing while reshaping plastic usage patterns in Belize through public education and the transformation of plastic waste into marketable recycled products.   🌎💚 #BiodiversityGuardians #PlasticPollution #SustainableFuture

🌊 🌊 GRUPO MORÓN FOR THE OCEANS ‘Grupo Morón for the oceans' represents another milestone for Grupo Morón in its mission to preserve our natural resources and ensure a healthy environment for future generations. The problem of plastic in seas and oceans is one of the greatest environmental threats of our time. The Mediterranean Sea has the highest concentration of plastic on the planet, and it's our sea, the one that has defined our culture over the centuries. Therefore, Grupo Morón, in collaboration with Gravity Wave (an impact company), is carrying out the removal of over 10 tons of plastic from the sea and discarded fishing nets. World Turtle Day was started in 2000 to spotlight the struggles turtles and tortoises face and inspire us to safeguard their habitats. Did you know? Research suggests that 52% of the world's turtles have eaten plastic waste. All sea turtle species are at risk from plastic. Sadly, plastic pollution remains a huge threat to all ocean life, including these majestic beings. At Blue Lynx, we believe that small changes lead to big impacts.
