STRATEGIC METALS: AUSTRALIAN RESOURCE MINISTER TO VISIT US AND CANADA THIS WEEK - Madeleine King aims to promote a green surcharge for Australia’s resources in hopes of making it more competitive. Australia’s Resource Minister Madeleine King will visit the U.S. and Canada this week to attend conferences and hold talks on critical minerals, supply chains, and decarbonization, according to a press release. King will first attend two conferences on opportunities and challenges for the mining industry in Canada’s largest city, Toronto. Following the conferences, King will meet with her Canadian and, later this week, U.S. counterparts to promote Australia’s mining sector and emphasize the high ESG and safety standards in the industry Down Under in an effort to get them on board a green surcharge for critical minerals. “The prices paid for our minerals need to recognise that Australian workers enjoy the best conditions and the highest safety standards,” King said. The minister has recently expressed that she sees a growing discrepancy in some Western nations between the demands for sustainability and the price people are prepared to pay for the needed critical minerals. CANADA: CENTERSTAGE FOR CRITICAL MINERALS THIS WEEK - Besides King’s visit, Canada also hosted a Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) meeting in Toronto on Sunday, the Korea Times reports. Led by Jose Fernandez, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, the members agreed to boost the policy support for 23 case projects on extracting, refining, and recycling critical minerals. Under the MSP, 13 countries and the European Union joined forces in 2022 to address critical minerals supply chains and connected challenges. Copper is vital for the green energy transition, and as demand rises, companies are exploring the potential of marine minerals. The world is going through a major transition towards digitisation, electrification, and green energy. Why go to the deep sea for copper? Copper has been mined by men since the stone age; it is the most important raw material in the industrial age. Marine minerals have been the source of copper from ophiolite complexes during the entire time; it has just been mined on land after continental drift has placed them above sea level and shuffled them around a bit, and temperature and pressure have metamorphosed the rocks. We now have the knowledge and technology to go where they form. Some have expressed concerns about deep-sea mining, but mining raw materials in locations where we will get the most metal-per-kg of rock with the least environmental impact must be considered. Extinct seafloor massive sulphide deposits along mid-ocean ridges show the potential of discoveries in the magnitude of 10s Mt of ore with Cu grades of 4-6% and potential of byproducts such as cobalt. The prices of critical minerals have plummeted in the last two years, forcing operations around the world to suspend as mining companies struggle to turn a profit, and compounding pressure on an industry that has been lauded as fundamental to the energy transition. Experts attribute the downturn to an overenthusiastic market response in 2021 and 2022. When the waters settled after a dramatic spike, mineral markets found themselves in a glut. Kevin Murphy, the director of metals and mining research at S&P Global Commodity Insights, said that the past year’s price crash was significant, even by the standards of an industry used to boom and bust. From the DRC to Indonesia, efforts to price out higher-cost producers have led to untenable surges in production. Ian Lange, an associate professor of economics and business at the Colorado School of Mines, noted: “This is what they call the super-cycle of mineral markets.” Even as technological innovations lead to possible structural reorientations, challenges across the mining industry are unlikely to dissipate anytime soon, potentially spelling trouble for a clean energy industry that is increasingly hungry for raw materials. This copper chart predicts exploration budgets for 2025 Copper had a stellar month. China announced a stimulus package that sent futures even higher, briefly reaching $4.7/lb on September 30. For this wrap-up, we looked into the relationship between copper prices and exploration budgets over 33 years (1990-2023). This analysis can provide insights into how miners and explorers may be investing in 2025. Over the analysis period, a correlation is apparent, especially after 2003. When prices soar, budgets follow with roughly a year delay, and remain higher for 1-2 years; when prices weaken, budgets drop more quickly. Interestingly, the bullishness in 2022 didn't match the scale of the 2012 spike, which we believe gives us a clue. Among top news, Germany seeks exposure to more projects and downstream options with a new critical minerals fund. It's promising to see more capital pools for the theme, but we remain sceptical of Europe's commitments more broadly. https://lnkd.in/gZDPz2xG NIMBY remains a strong headwind for mining projects in the continent. Ask Rio Tinto... their proposed Jadar lithium mine still faces strong community opposition, despite the support of the Serbian government. All in all, and as long as capital is available, we should see a new rise in exploration budgets in 2025. Given the sticky global challenges, we'd expect this lift to be mild, and it could be surgically targeted to small to intermediate deposits (think Filo, NGEX Minerals Ltd. and others we mentioned last month) to better manage risks. Visualizing Copper Production by Country in 2023 #Copper is considered an essential metal for the clean energy #transition because it is a great conductor of electricity. As a result, governments around the world have been encouraging the construction of new mines, and mining companies have been seeking new projects and acquiring existing mines to meet the growing demand. #Chile and #Peru account for one-third of the world’s copper output, boasting two largest mines in the world, Escondida and Collahuasi. Meanwhile, African countries have rapidly increased their production. The Democratic Republic of #Congo, for example, transitioned from being a secondary copper producer in the late 1990s to becoming the third-largest producer by 2023. Part of the growth in copper mining in Africa is attributed to high investment from #China. Chinese mining companies represent 8% of Africa’s total output in the mining sector. Within its territory, China has also seen a 277% growth in copper production over the last three decades. In the #US, Arizona is the leading copper-producing state, accounting for approximately 70% of domestic output. Copper is also mined in Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. #Poland is the only European country in the ranking, contributing only 0.4% of global production. Meanwhile, speculation about total demand inflames the #LME market and the value of red gold remains close to $10,000/tonne, at its highest level in two years. #energytransition #ai #epower
