Do you know?? We at The Seafarers’ Charity are advocates for action. Our trustees, Martyn and Debbie, among others provided thought leadership on the future of maritime skills, training and people at the All Party Parliamentary Maritime and Port group this week. My key takeaways ⚓️ We, as an industry, are the Captains of our various vessels. It is up to us to close our visibility gap and be the best publicists we can be. Educate everyone you know of the their connection to the sea, young and old! ⚓️ Diversity, equality and inclusion in the maritime industry still has a long way to go. We need to do more in encouraging at the bare minimum, diversity of thought. It’s good for business, it fuels innovation and is essential for the industry’s longevity. Be bold and speak up even it is it an alternative view point. ⚓️ Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate. We are all working to the same end, that is (aside from helping all who work at sea or connected to the sea thrive) the sustainability of the maritime industry. It is not only more efficient, there is also strength in numbers which will aid the pathway for change in our industry. In short, some of you may have heard my hand adage: all fingers on your hand are not equal yet each individually essential for your hand to effectively function. We all have a part to play to be advocates for action and change. I am proud to be part of this wonderful industry which drives the world economy. Congratulations to RNLI on reaching an incredible 200-year milestone of dedicated service to maritime safety. The unwavering commitment and lifesaving efforts have been a beacon of hope for countless mariners in distress. Collaboration with Independent Lifeboats As we commemorate this historic occasion, we also want to shine a spotlight on the invaluable partnership between RNLI and Independent Lifeboats such as our service, Hamble Lifeboat. Our shared goal of ensuring safety at sea unites us in a significant bond of collaboration. Highlighting the Differences While both RNLI and National Independent Lifeboat Association share a common mission of saving lives at sea, there are differences worth noting. RNLI, as a charitable organisation, operates a large fleet of lifeboats and stations across the UK and Ireland, supported by the government, donations and fundraising efforts. Independent lifeboats are often smaller, community-based operations, serving specific regions or coastal areas, and may rely on a combination of volunteer efforts and local support to sustain their existence. Together Towards Safety Despite these differences, what truly matters is our collective dedication to maritime safety.
