In #MaritimeWeek24 there was only one place to be (apologies British Ports Association!) yesterday and that was in St Paul’s Cathedral for the Annual National Service for #Seafarers (ANSS) in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal. Marking the 200th anniversary of the RNLI, the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the 50th anniversary of WISTA UK and the contribution of all #Merchant Navy, fishing and Royal Navy seafarers, it was a wonderful occasion to remember and give thanks for all those who transport or protect “90% of everything”. As #Chair of The Seafarers’ Charity it was a joy to welcome #CEO of the #charity Deborah Layde & team and our guests to the Odgers Berndtson offices for a reception. It was a pleasure in particular to have Mike Kane MP, our new Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom #Maritime #Minister attend and speak of HMG’s commitment to #seafarer #welfare. Also most welcome were Rhett Hatcher #CEO UK Chamber of Shipping, Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Andrew Burns, Sarah Kenny OBE of BMT, Baroness Charlotte Vere, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, the Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster and Commodore Robert Bellfield. HM Coastguard was proud to attend the Annual National Service for Seafarers for the first time this week. The event helps to celebrate and remember those who serve at sea. Kevin Moran, a Coastguard Rescue Officer with Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team who joined the contingent, said: “Being a part of the service was a great honour, especially to be part of the first team to represent HM Coastguard and to carry our colours at the event." Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay! 💚 #WorkingAtSea can be lonely and isolating. At The Seafarers’ Charity, we are #ProudFunders of essential services and projects that support people's #MentalHealth and #wellbeing - including The International Seafarers' Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN) SeafarerHelp, Befrienders Worldwide, Safer Waves, Relate, Seafarers' Advice & Information Line (SAIL) and CHIRP. In addition, we fund two welfare officers at UKSA to support #superyacht trainees. Additionally, we partnered with The Nautical Institute last year to develop a range of training courses focused on enhancing leadership skills and preventing toxic behaviours that can harm everyone’s mental health and wellbeing. This collaboration has also resulted in a Welfare Toolkit aimed at enhancing resilience. I was truly honoured to be invited to the Annual National Service for Seafarers 2024 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where we paid tribute to the dedication and resilience of seafarers and everyone in the maritime sector. It was a privilege to represent WISTA UK and Waves Group Ltd by reading a prayer for the King and Commonwealth during the ceremony. Seeing HRH Princess Royal, who delivered a powerful reading on the 'Good Samaritan' (Luke 10: 25-37), made the day even more special. Her message was a poignant reminder of the selfless contributions seafarers make to keep global trade flowing smoothly. We must continue to stand by these individuals - advocating for their rights for fair treatment, pay, safety, and mental health. Their well-being is crucial to the lifeblood of global trade and economic development. Honoured to mark the Annual National Service for Seafarers 2024, a time to pay tribute to the dedication and resilience of those who navigate our seas. Seafarers play a vital role in global trade, safety, and environmental stewardship, often facing great challenges in the pursuit of their work. This year’s service was particularly moving, with a reading by the HRH Princess Royal, highlighting the importance of the maritime community Luke 10. 25-37. It was also lovely to hear Jucilla Walters MSc, BA Hons lead a prayer and the work of WISTA UK be highlighted. Together, we honour those who have served and support the next generation of maritime professionals. Here’s to a future where their work is valued and recognised worldwide. The Annual National Service for Seafarers took place at St Paul’s Cathedral, yesterday afternoon. The poignant service attended by HRH Princess Royal, celebrated all who serve or have served at sea. These men and women who answer the call of the sea, who we depend upon for 90% of everything moved by sea were graciously honoured by all who attended the service. We were called to action to be a “good neighbours”. In simple terms, we are called to lend helping hands to all seafarers in times of need. It is our privilege to be the Ecosystem of Support to seaferers. After the service, we gathered with those who have collaborated with us to be a force for good for seafarers of every profession. Graciously hosted by our Chair Paul Butterworth AFNI, we were honoured to have the Maritime Minister, Mike Kane MP Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom who promised he was going to be the seafarer’s champion, advocating for the better working lives at sea for all during his tenure. It is an honour to organise and host the Annual National Service for Seafarers, each year. We hope you enjoyed the Service. Thank you to all who make this possible.
