In just a few days, we’ll gather in Delhi for Commons Convening 2024, an event dedicated to the community-led stewardship of the Commons. From August 27-29, various stakeholders will unite to celebrate grassroots initiatives, share experiences, and chart pathways to preserve and rejuvenate our community forests, pastures, and water resources. Commons in India are diverse and vital, meeting the basic needs of many communities, particularly the poor, marginalised, and Indigenous groups. These forests, pastures, and other common resources are vital for all our survival, thanks to the many ecosystem services they provide. Deeply connected to the Commons for their socio-cultural identities, the communities manage these resources through diverse acts of ‘commoning’. This makes it essential to protect, promote and reinforce community rights to these lands and recognise them as the true stewards of the commons. In #10Days, this collaborative effort will help shape a unified vision and drive collective action for the Commons, aiming to benefit both communities and the environment for generations to come. | लोक के लोग | This International Day of Democracy, we echo the call for communities taking active charge of governing and managing their natural resources. We take this opportunity to share a short film that weaves together the story of their remarkable efforts in the Indian context, where 350 million rural poor depend on the Commons for their basic needs. As Commons are accessed by the diverse groups, their stewardship, led by the local communities, is an exemplar of democratic principles of empowered self-governance. Communities use their traditional knowledge and take collective responsibility in restoring, protecting and managing forests, water, land, air, traditions and much more. When communities have rights and access over their resources, along with a supportive environment, people’s stewardship strengthens ecosystems and ensures a resilient future for all. 🔙 #TBT This report raises awareness about the Draft National Forest Policy published by the Government of #India in March 2018. 🇮🇳 With this new legal framework, the Government of India seeks to further deny Indigenous Peoples´ rights to lands and #selfdetermination by taking control over the community forest resources, an estimated 4,429,818 hectares for which titles were issued to #IndigenousPeoples under the Forest Rights Act. 🚨 This draft policy has serious implications not only on the livelihood of millions of Indigenous Peoples but also on #biodiversity and #climate. 👉 Learn more: https://bit.ly/4bRMMOl #WeAreIndigenous #humanrights

A technical director specialising in the management of buried assets, particularly in the water industry.
An interesting article. I do wonder whether we should review the whole area of economic theory. maybe we should adopt the approach of Bhutan and focus on Gross National Happiness, rather than wealth? The Bhutanese focus on 4 areas: -sustainable and equitable socio-economic development; -environmental conservation; -preservation and promotion of culture; and -good governance. Could we learn something from them?

#inequity #inequality #water #globalcommons WRI Water 'The causes of water insecurity in the Tana watershed are complex, driven in part by local conditions like a growing population, an expanding economy, inadequate water governance and insufficient investment in infrastructure like wells and sewage systems. But there are also bigger sources far outside the control of Tana’s farming communities. Their story lays bare one of the fundamental inequities in water management: While water problems are felt most acutely at the local level, their drivers are increasingly global. Water Is Part of the Global Commons, but it Isn’t Treated that Way Water is usually seen as a local common good, and water challenges a local issue — so much so that “water is local” is an axiom commonly heard in the water expert community. This dominant perception influences how water is managed. The burden of local water security falls largely on the shoulders of local institutions like national ministries, city water utilities, or community-based organizations.
