2024 SDG MEDIA ZONE: THE SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE AND A CALL FOR PEACE The SDG Media Zone is an event organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications in collaboration with the PVBLIC Foundation and held in parallel to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which takes place between 23-27 September. Complementarily to the UNGA, the SDG Media Zone seeks to bring discussions about advancing the 2030 Agenda beyond the policy sphere and into public discourse through impactful, in-depth interviews and conversations on global issues that affect people worldwide. This year, the event highlights the focus tracks of the Summit of the Future, including the new agendas for peace, global governance, financing for development, digital cooperation, and future generations, along with staple Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) issues. The Summit of the Future gathered world leaders to discuss and adopt an action-oriented pact, outlining measures foster, strengthen, and advance the SDGs. Given the state of the world, marked by violence and conflict, one of the main focus areas of the Summit of the Future revolves around the Secretary-General’s New Agenda for Peace. The document calls for a revigorated and collective security system based on the principles of trust, security, and universalism, including the importance to prevent conflict, violence and reduce the human cost of weapons in order to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda to address the underlying drivers of violence and insecurity. The priorities align with the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons’ (PFSALW) overall vision reiterating the urgency of addressing the prevention and reduction of uncontrolled proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) to achieve sustainable peace, given their role as multipliers of violence. 📣📣📣 The U.S. Department of State and the European Commission will officially launch the ‘MSP Forum’ on the sidelines of the next TTC meeting in Leuven on April 4-5, as announced by European Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis and Deputy Director General Leopoldo Rubinacci at yesterday’s Conference on Trade Policy and CRMs organised by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024. High level reps from the United States, Namibia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other potential Forum partners are expected to be in attendance. 🎯 The MSP Forum will bring together #criticalmineral producers and consumers to identify and support extraction and processing projects, as well as policies, that support shared #supplychain diversification and sustainability goals. 🌎 This integration of the Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) and the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Club project is an important milestone in transatlantic efforts to scale up and secure the mineral supply chains needed for the transition, and drive a global race to the top on environmental, social, labour and governance standards. 🛤 We see this can work as a blueprint for new forms of global collaboration across energy and industrial supply chains. You can learn more about the MSP by listening to U.S. Undersecretary of State Jose W. Fernandez speaking at #SAFESummit24 earlier this month. SAFE is the sole NGO partner to the U.S. Department of State in the MSP, and EIES is proud to support SAFE’s Center for Critical Minerals Strategy. https://lnkd.in/ga3iHEZW
