Inspired after spending a week with Mais A and the remarkable The White Helmets leadership in the Bay Area. Over the past several months, we’ve collaborated to strengthen their resource mobilization strategy—targeting foundations, high net-worth donors, and forging partnerships across academia and the corporate world. What’s humbling is what they’ve taught me in return: the immense challenges of saving lives and protecting over 6 million people in Syria, all while navigating the complexities of a conflict perpetrated by illegitimate leaders and perpetuated by competing geopolitical forces (US, Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, ISIL, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel). 🚨 The White Helmets mission is more crucial than ever, and external support remains vital to sustaining their lifesaving efforts. https://lnkd.in/ead6mt6p #ResourceMobilization #HumanitarianSupport #WhiteHelmets #SyriaCrisis #NonprofitLeadership #HumanRights

Since the earthquake in February 2023 the overall humanitarian response in Northwest Syria #NWS has removed around 800,000 m3 of #debris. UNDP with it's debris management mandate has been involved in removing a big part of it. It's been a programme with many challenges that has taken more than a year and is not close to the same complexity that will be faced once debris removal can start in #Gaza. It has to be a well-planned and collaborative effort between different actors to secure safe access and returns for the people. This would be a first step towards #earlyrecovery.
Gaza’s 37m tonnes of bomb-filled debris could take 14 years to clear, says expert

Grievances between different ethnic groups and an unstable security situation are important drivers of ISIS recruitment, but other dynamics are often ignored. This was the case of rural northwest Iraq, argues Sinéad Barry in an article for the Climate Diplomacy platform. Employment opportunities outside of farming are rare. Without sufficient environmental resources to maintain these livelihoods, the so-called Islamic State offered an escape. Read the full piece for insights on how low-income, rural recruitment was important for the 2014 surge and how addressing water and livelihood issues is essential for Iraq's disaster risk reduction strategies. 📰 adelph.it/ISISWater Full research to be published in a Special Edition of The Defence Horizon Journal.

When a crisis hits, we must act fast. We need the right set of people at the right time, and those who have the skills and expertise to respond to immediate needs. With the number of crises at an all-time high, from climate disasters to armed conflicts, ensuring these capacities becomes even more critical. We are better when we work together to tackle crises. And the Standby Partnership Network is a great illustration of the power of partnerships. It allows for the pooling of knowledge and expertise of several organizations leading to better impact for the communities we serve. We've partnered with 13 organizations, including the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, NORCAP - part of the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Center for International Peace Operations, FBA (Folke Bernadotte Academy) and RedR Australia. One year ago today, Russia destroyed the Kakhovka hydro-electric power plant, causing one of the largest man-made ecological disasters. The devastation led to mass flooding across more than 30 settlements in the southern region, forcing over 3,000 people to evacuate and leaving thousands without clean drinking water for months. Thanks to your support, United Help Ukraine responded immediately with humanitarian and medical aid. We continue to assist the affected regions by providing state-of-the-art water filtration systems, ensuring access to clean drinking water. The world must remember Russia's crimes of terrorism and ecocide. #KakhovkaDam #SupportUkraine #Ukraine

An insurance payout for our Disaster Response Emergency Fund (IFRC-DREF) has just been activated as disaster response demands have passed their CHF 33M trigger point, says Nena Stoiljkovic, IFRC USG for Global Relationships, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization, at #SDGLive. The IFRC-DREF could receive up to CHF 15M as demands from natural hazard-related disasters rise. It provides fast funding to National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, especially for smaller emergencies that often go unnoticed globally. #GlobalGoals
