Celebrating Africa's Day is a celebration of African unity and progress. Marking Africa's leap toward sustainable development, aligning with UN’s sustainable development goals #SDG6, #SDG11, and #SDG11 and, in particular, towards sustainable #water management, as water is a fundamental resource crucial for economic growth, public health, and environmental sustainability. As Carlos Araújo, our Engineering and Production Director, shared - "In my over two years at Owini, I've witnessed a deep understanding that celebrating Africa Day entails acknowledging the strides made in adopting sustainable water solutions". Check out some interesting facts: 🔎 Rapid Expansion: Over the last decade, access to clean water has increased by 15% across sub-Saharan Africa. 🔎 Innovative Solutions: Countries like Angola, Kenya, and South Africa are pioneering solar-powered desalination plants, showcasing Africa's commitment to sustainable technologies. 🔎 Investment Surge: Annual investments in water infrastructure have doubled, signaling a robust commitment to improving access. Africa has the potential to drive growth through innovation in its water sector, by adopting several key strategies. Public-private partnerships play a critical role in addressing water challenges effectively, as they combine expertise and funding. At the community level, local initiatives are empowering residents to manage water resources sustainably, ensuring long-lasting benefits. Moreover, the development of progressive policies supports efficient water management, which in turn attracts global investors and accelerates advancements in the sector. Considering these remarkable advancements, it's worth contemplating whether Africa can lead and even inspire the world in water sustainability. Resharing this inspiring article, I would like to highlight the innovation in solar-powered desalination plants in countries like Angola. This approach not only demonstrates Africa's commitment to sustainable technologies but also represents a practical and efficient solution to one of the continent's greatest challenges: access to potable water. By integrating solar energy with desalination, we are leveraging an abundant and renewable energy source to convert brackish or seawater into drinking water, making communities more resilient and self-sufficient. This innovation not only improves public health and quality of life but also drives economic growth by providing a vital resource in a sustainable manner. An exemplary project can be seen in Ombala yo Mungo, Angola, where a solar-powered desalination plant has significantly improved access to clean water for the local community. This project serves as a model for similar initiatives across the continent, showcasing the potential of sustainable technology to transform lives. Learn more about it here: https://lnkd.in/g_SxcCgu I invite everyone to reflect on how these initiatives can inspire and be replicated in other parts of the world. What are your thoughts? Share your ideas and opinions!

In the landscape of development initiatives, large-funded projects often carry immense potential for positive change. However, in South Africa and beyond, many of these initiatives stumble despite good intentions. Often, the root cause is not a lack of enthusiasm but rather a shortfall in the essential skills needed to navigate complex challenges and achieve lasting transformation. Central to addressing this issue is rigorous project evaluation. Large-funded projects require thorough validation processes, including mid-term reviews (MTR) and end-point assessments. Effective evaluations can make the difference between success and failure, significantly impacting conservation, upliftment and household economies across Southern Africa. However, navigating the landscape of project evaluation presents challenges. Funders grapple with concerns over accountability and sustainability, while grant recipients seek validation and potential additional funding. Herein lies the importance of good project evaluation. Our framework, based on the robust criteria outlined by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development's Development Assistance Committee (OECD DAC), offers a comprehensive perspective tailored to Southern Africa's unique context. Specialising in conservation and sustainable livelihoods, we bring extensive experience and a commitment to post-project sustainability. What sets us apart is our approach. We view evaluation as a collaborative journey, rooted in partnership and a nuanced understanding of local contexts. By combining environmental, socio-economic, and people-development skills, we provide actionable recommendations that go beyond theory. To those seeking to maximise their impact in Southern Africa and beyond, we extend an invitation: get in touch, and let's explore how effective project evaluation can pave the way for lasting transformation. Together, we can turn aspirations into tangible realities, shaping a brighter future for communities and ecosystems alike. Exciting developments in Southern Madagascar! The USAID Water Assessment Buy-In is paving the way for actionable solutions to enhance water security in the Grand Sud region. The World Bank is investing US $16 million through 20261 in village-level water supply infrastructure rehabilitation across the area of interest in the Grand Sud. The project focuses on upgrading and rehabilitating existing manual pump-equipped boreholes and converting them to solar power. While this upgrade promises increased reliability, it also brings challenges, such as the need for more substantial institutional support and effective service management. USAID’s #REALWater report highlights critical issues: a chronic lack of local capacity, financial sustainability concerns, and the need for better community engagement. 📢 A huge shoutout to Dr Tina Gama-Kotzé who represented #BostonCityCampus at the recent International Interdisciplinary Security of Land Tenure Conference held at the University of Free State. Tina's presentation, "𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺: 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺-𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘖𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳", explored community-private partnerships (CPPs) in the renewable energy context as a means of contributing towards a green economy in South Africa for present and future generations. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: The urgency to combat the climate crisis is driving a global transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. In South Africa, this transition is highlighted in the 2022 Presidential Climate Commission Report and the envisaged Climate Change Bill (B9-2022), emphasising renewable energy for a ‘just energy transition’. Independent Power Producers (IPPs) play a key role in developing renewable energy facilities (REFs), requiring extensive land acquisition and compliance with various regulations. While renewable energy offers benefits like employment and cleaner energy, it can also drive conflict. Issues include displacement due to mineral mining, threats to endangered species, impacts on agricultural land value, and competition over scarce land resources. Failure to manage social impacts can lead to delays, unrest, and legal issues. Effective public participation and community engagement are crucial. Positive examples show that community-private partnerships (CPPs) can enhance rural livelihoods and sustainable development, contributing to a green economy in South Africa.
