I listen to NPR in the background while I work every day. And I was rather alarmed at this statistic I just heard - According to the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, since the onset of the pandemic, colleges have been shutting down rapidly, now at a rate of one every week. Who would have thought you'd need to start investigating a college's financial health and enrollment trends before making a choice? But considering the stories of students left with challenges in finding and transferring to another program I heard today, it might make sense to take a look into these upfront. What happens when a college shuts its doors for good? | 1A #highereducation #college #educationnews

🚨 A new paper has been published on http://PublicPolicy.ie ‘Student Carers in Higher Education Institutions in Ireland: An Emerging Policy Issue’ by Dr Maria Pierce summarises key findings from the international literature on this topic, including from the limited, but emergent, Irish research. It identifies the key support needs of student carers and outlines responses, drawing on lessons from the UK, where research and policy is more advanced. 🔗 You can access the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e3eSzCkn

I have something to share with my South Carolina connections: yesterday the South Carolina Department of Administration launched the all new SC.GOV website, which is intended to create a safe, secure and seamless online user experience across agencies for our state’s citizens and make it easier to interact and engage with government agencies. It offers a new page design and interface, and it also provides the opportunity for a personalized user experience. By establishing a login, you can: • Create a personalized digital wallet to pay bills • Subscribe to services and receive email and text notifications • Access and favorite different services • View receipt document archives Keep in mind that it just launched and the services will continue to grow as agencies put more time into integrating it. And if you are interested in college-related info like state scholarship and grant updates, my workplace (Commission on Higher Education) will also be leveraging this as an additional platform - once you login you can find us through the “Discover Services” tab on your dashboard if you want to subscribe! https://sc.gov/

The new 'Case for Cambridge' document is out. I'm pleased to see the ambition to benchmark against Cambridge, MA but it falls short in one crucial aspect: the implementation strategy. The report wonderfully sets the stage for transformative changes and highlights the potential impacts on education, innovation, and the local economy. However, the lack of detailed implementation plans leaves stakeholders guessing about how these visions will be realized. The ambition and direction set forth are commendable, but without a clear path to realization, there remains a gap between aspiration and reality. For Cambridge to truly harness its potential and lead by example, this implementation gap must be addressed. Your thoughts? #Cambridge #EducationPolicy #ImplementationStrategy #PublicPolicy https://lnkd.in/eV3jVkSB

Too many students aren't learning to read at a basic level, in part because more than half of states use weak early reading licensure tests for teachers. A weak test doesn’t gauge whether teachers understand the core components of reading instruction. Explore the National Council on Teacher Quality’s latest State of the States report to learn what policy actions state leaders can take to strengthen elementary teachers’ ability to teach kids to read. https://lnkd.in/eradvduT
