As Upside grows, our sustainability impact grows with it. When the co-founders started this company almost 6 years ago, they asked themselves: why are we doing this? The answer was: we’re creating this company for impact. We believe in the power of technology to change the world for the better. We try to live by that every day, and it’s why we make the business decisions we do. As part of our 1% commitment, Upside has offset over 3.3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from fuel purchases through our platform (equivalent to removing around 720K cars from the road for a year), and has rescued 1.75 million pounds of food. There is huge progress being made in the industry toward a more sustainable future, but there are also some 'sacred cows', especially in whisky that we need to move past if we're to really walk the talk of sustainability. It was a privilege to be invited onto this panel, not because we're doing anything super noteworthy that I could shout about, (the struggle is real!) but because I got to hear firsthand about some of the more innovative solutions that are emerging AND i discovered something that I wish i'd had access to when we were setting Woven up which is why i'm sharing with my network now. We were well intentioned founders wanting to use our 'blank canvas' status to set ourselves up in as sustainable way as we could. We spent months searching for answers, trying to do the right thing, but realising amidst all the conflicting 'truths' it is way more complicated than anyone could imagine. We know that the decisions we made about materials, weight and finishes are only the tip of the iceberg, but it was great to hear about more innovative and ultimately, impactful solutions as part of this panel. As part of the seminar I was exposed to this amazing resource from the wine industry called the The Porto Protocol Foundation, set up by Taylors Port. In their own words "We are a global movement sharing practical knowledge to empower the wine industry to take action to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability.... we were born out of the belief that, if we work together, share our successes and experiences, we can achieve systemic change and create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the wine industry." I've spent the best part of the day on their site and have gotten so much clearer of a whole bunch of issues that we believed we'd need a specialist consultant to unpick - and that's the point i think. What is the Circular Economy? It is a generic term for an industrial economy that is, by design, restorative and in which component and material flows are of two types: - Biological nutrients, designed to re-enter the biosphere safely; and - Technical nutrients or assets, which are designed to circulate at high quality (without entering the biosphere). A #circulareconomy aims to ‘design out’ waste. Waste does not exist—products are designed and optimised to re-enter the economy whilst maintaining maximum value. The circular economy outlines a set of enabling system conditions and provides a framework for the transformation of the economy through the restoration of eco-system services, shift to renewable energy, elimination of waste and pollution and increased resilience of financial and labour markets.
