#VAntageOnFirstpost 435 Tonnes of African Gold Lost to Smuggling in 2022 | Vantage with Palki Sharma A new report by Swissaid says that in 2022, 435 tonnes of gold were smuggled out of the African continent. A lion's share of the smuggled gold ended up in the UAE, where it was processed and re-exported to other parts of the world. Once gold is processed, most countries mark the processing country as the place of origin. In this way, African gold worth about $31 billion ended up getting smuggled out of the continent, and so it could not contribute to its source country's economy. Most of the smuggled gold came from artisanal mines, which can be unsafe, or run by militant groups who exploit people to fund their own activities. --- Gold | Smuggling | Africa | 435 Tonnes Gold | Firstpost | World News | Vantage | Palki Sharma #gold #smuggling #africangold #goldsmuggling #smuggledgold #2022 #africa #firstpost #vantageonfirstpost #palkisharma #worldnews

#HerThoughts #Value #Addition: The #Road #Less #Travelled Africa exports its mineral wealth only to buy it back as finished products at a premium. I know it is not news..... This model, a vestige of colonial exploitation, undermines our economic sovereignty and stifles industrial growth. The AMV advocates for a shift towards mineral value addition — processing minerals locally to create jobs and retain more value within the continent. Yet, investment in this vision lags. Before diving into that, uuuh! seem like a long dive, lets take a look at the Africa Mining Vision and 1. Appreciate the thought of it. 2. Appreciate the resourcefulness of it, Talk about the Nine (9) clusters in it leaving no stone un turned from the source to the market kinda thing. 3. Put it into Action, No one outside the 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) will come and implement it on our behalf. And on the next couple of post I will be sharing my views on this. What is your take on the African Mining Vision? Share you country too as you comment. #SheIsAMine #AMV #Agenda2063 #TheAfricaWeWant #ValueAddition #EconomicSovereignty #IndustrialGrowth

#SouthSudan's emerging gold market is quickly becoming a popular choice for traders in Africa, according to a 2023 report by Organized Crime and Reporting Project (OCCRP). In 2020, the country's gold exports to the United Arab Emirates and #Uganda alone totalled more than 3,000 kilograms, bringing in US$110 million for the young nation. This figure is believed to be a fraction of what the industry can dig up. However, over-reliance on #oil as the major source of revenue means the country has yet to harness the full economic potential of this precious mineral.
