Racism in Golf: A Persistent Issue in the Southern United States The issue of racism in golf, particularly in the southern United States, is deeply rooted in the sport's history and continues to manifest in various ways today. Historically, golf has been a predominantly white sport, with significant barriers to entry for Black and Hispanic individuals, both as players and as members of golf clubs. Historical Context Golf's history in America is intertwined with racial exclusion. For instance, Black people, both free and enslaved, were often involved in the construction and maintenance of golf courses but were largely barred from playing on them. The PGA's "Caucasian-only" clause, which lasted until 1961, explicitly prohibited Black golfers from participating in its events. Even after the formal end of such policies, many private clubs continued to exclude Black members through various means. Modern-Day Issues Despite some progress, many golf clubs, especially in the South, still reflect this legacy of exclusion. Memberships at these clubs remain predominantly white, while the staff is often composed of Black and Hispanic individuals. This dynamic can create a racially charged environment, where the power imbalance is starkly visible. Examples of Racism in Golf Clubs 1. **Shoal Creek Incident (1990)**: Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Alabama faced significant backlash when its founder declared that the club would not be pressured into accepting Black members. This led to protests and a temporary loss of sponsorships until the club admitted its first Black member. 2. **Augusta National Golf Club**: Augusta National, home of the Masters Tournament, did not invite a Black golfer to compete until 1975 and did not admit its first Black member until 1990. The club's history of exclusion is well-documented, and it only admitted its first female members in 2012. 3. **Personal Accounts**: Anecdotal evidence from golfers, such as a Reddit user who recounted experiencing racist comments while playing in Alabama, highlights that racism is still a prevalent issue in golf today. Efforts for Change There have been efforts to address these issues and promote diversity in golf. For example, the PGA and USGA have implemented rules requiring clubs that host their events to meet inclusive membership standards. Additionally, organizations like the Advocates Pro Golf Association work to increase the number of Black players on the PGA Tour. Conclusion While there have been strides towards inclusivity, the legacy of racism in golf, particularly in the southern United States, remains a significant issue. The predominantly white memberships and the racial composition of staff at many golf clubs reflect ongoing disparities. Addressing these issues requires continued efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity within the sport. #RacismInGolf #GolfHistory #SouthernGolf #DiversityInGolf #InclusionInSports #PGA #USGA

Teaching Elite Players vs Amateurs - What's the Difference? No matter the student, the role of the instructor has never changed in it's purest sense: To Improve the Clients Condition.... I consider myself very lucky because whether I'm teaching a Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose or Paul McGinley or one of my members at Knickerbocker Country Club in NJ, I've always recognized 'that' one common denominator; to improve the clients condition. Curiously, I've always viewed it like a surgeon in so much as it matters not who is on the table, because at that point they are all the same, all that matters is they exit, on their terms, with the prospect of getting better. As instructors, we have a job to do: 1. Discover what the student needs help with (be specific) 2. Watch, learn and diagnose. 3. Clearly explain the new technical direction. 4. Teach. So here's the trick, who ever that student may be: find out what success would look like to them - this can be discovered by one of the following questions: 1. 'After the session today, what would you like to achieve?' 2. 'What would you like to see the ball do differently?' 3. 'How will you know that things are changing for you?' This is what I call the discovery period and the more your discover pre lesson the more informed you are of the important deliverables. To end, I consider myself lucky, students are students to me with challenges they need to overcome and it really doesn't matter if they have 6 Majors, a handicap of 6 or have been playing for 6 weeks...the end point is simple: Improve them allied to their desires.... Took a bit of a hiatus from, well, almost everything post 420. With 9+ events in the last two weeks of April, plus traveling to DC for 420 Lobby Days.. the burnout was SUPER real. A mountain of content - photos, videos, memories, and moments from a whirlwind 420 season, that I didn’t know how or where to start sharing. But I’m back on LinkedIn now and fired up to be standing on the edge of our busiest summer yet! I’ll start with this recap of our 2nd Annual Runners High Chi 420 Run/Walk, which I’m super proud of. 70+ stoners gathered for an epic 420 community celebration consisting of miles, music, and lots and lots of Mary Jane! The energy was incredible and better than we could’ve imagined. We showed up to do 3 things - Get Lit, Get Fit, and Break The Stigma. ✅✅✅ Who ever would’ve thought that there’d be such a positive response for a cannabis community run club? We did, that’s why Anakaren Ramirez and I started Runners High Chicago! Check out the recap below! If you want to get your brand involved for our upcoming 7.10 installment, reach out! Sponsorship spots are now available! Also, who wants to sponsor 2 stoners for the upcoming Bank of America Chicago Half Marathon on June 9th? As Runners High Chicago’s co-founders, we’re running this 13.1 to prove that stoners aren’t lazy and unproductive! If you want to support the cause, let’s chat! #ProductivePothead #Stoner #Runner #Cannabis #Athlete #BreakTheStigma #PlantPower 🍃🔥💨🏃🏻➡️💪🏽

How good is this! It’s what you should expect in 2024. A playbook to increase your opportunity to experience the vibe anticipated in this environment. Lesson: Set rules early to negate preconceived and old ways of playing and behaving. Challenge: Out with the old and in with the new! There's no doubt if you’re leading a high-performing team, your relationships are bound on agreed strengths, known to increase the vibe that permeates results and outcomes that make an impact. Golf is set in its traditions set in St Andrews, Scotland yet every few years it rewrites or creates new rules (5 rules in 2023) and here in Melbourne’s east, Morak Public Golf Course is serving a multigenerational audience with a new simple set of rules to enjoy golf. Bravo Whitehorse City Council and the team and its members at the Morak Public Golf Club for providing such a contemporary space and vibe. P.S. How you approach your Playbook will determine its acceptance, application, and achievement. I can help you successfully create your playbook. #golf #customerexperience #performance #relationships

The video linked below is an example of exceptional messaging for a private club. They nail both the emotional and value of joining a club, and demonstrate how their resources and facilities support their values and mission. The ability to clearly communicate your vision is not a panacea, but it provides a NORTH STAR for your staff and attracts consumers who believe what you believe. Three reasons why I love the Grizzly Swing & Sip Beginner Golf series… check it out! June session is almost full. After that there is a July session. Comment or message me with any questions.
June session is almost full… checkout 3 reasons why I love the The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge Swing & Sip Beginner Series. 1. The golf pros! It makes a huge impact when your golf instructors are not only knowledgeable but also engaging, positive and encouraging! 2. This program is an incredible value for all the aspects that it covers- full swing, chipping, putting and on-course instruction 3. Community and support that you get by being part of a group of people relatively new to the game - you have built in cheerleaders and this makes a big difference especially when you’re starting out. Celebrate the wins together- big and small! Bonus- you get 2 drink tickets each week. Put those drinks on ice and bring them with you for the lessons. Then sit on the patio and chat with the girls after formal instruction. https://lnkd.in/esMj_54J Questions? Drop a comment or send a message! On the course today, my golf score wasn't the highlight, but taking the time to appreciate the splendor of North Georgia surely was. In life and business, our swings might not always land like we may want them to, but there's beauty in the attempt. As we work towards our goals, let's focus on the positive strides we make every day. 💼🏌️♂️ #BusinessGrowth #Positivity #NetworkingOnTheGreens
