One of Charles Coffin's most enduring contributions to GE (and to industry writ large) was advancing the science of industrial management, particularly around standard competencies for managers and employee rating systems. Coffin's colleague and GE executive John Broderick published on this topic in the 1920's.  “The primary purpose of the present analysis is to illustrate the practicability of predicting managerial capacity through the determination and appraisal of essential qualifications. The problem of personnel is receiving widespread attention, and will be solved largely through the selection of capable managers, because the man at the top gives an organization its tone, and are the measure of its capacity for service.” “A manager ... who supervises the work of a thousand, ten thousand, or twenty thousand employees, must be richly endowed with imagination, in addition to having the qualifications expected of him in common with the foreman." “What is meant by imagination?” "So far as it relates to administrative or supervisory duties in industry, imagination may be defined as the power to understand what is not obvious, to balance and coordinate a great variety of factors, some of which may be obscure and call for research, to see ahead, as well as on both sides and behind, but particularly to see ahead and to make plans for next month’s or next year’s work.
