International Epilepsy Day was established to increase awareness around this condition: "Despite being one of the world's oldest known medical conditions, public fear and misunderstanding about epilepsy persist, making many people reluctant to talk about it. For many people living with epilepsy, the misconceptions and discrimination can be more difficult to overcome than the seizures themselves." But for those of us living with epilepsy, this dread can be magnified by the fear of having a seizure in front of colleagues who may not know how to help. This fear can be overwhelming and isolating. However, there are resources available to help: The National Epilepsy Foundation's Epilepsy Support Hotline is a crucial tool for individuals and employers. This hotline offers guidance and support, ensuring that everyone in the workplace is informed and prepared to assist in case of a seizure. As we strive for more inclusive and supportive workplaces, it's essential for companies to proactively seek out resources like this hotline. Celebrating National Epilepsy Week: A Personal Journey Towards Hope! Today, during National Epilepsy Week, I would like to share a very personal post, as I reflect on a journey that has been both challenging and inspiring. My son, who once faced the daunting realities of epilepsy, reminds me of the resilience and strength that lies within us all. As a child, he endured countless hospital visits, the cold and scary chambers of MRI machines, and nights interrupted by the necessity of ECG monitors. His passion for sports was put on hold, leaving him heartbroken. Yet, through these trials, we witnessed the power of medical innovation and the human spirit. With the expertise of incredible neurosurgeons, the efficacy of advanced medications, and the unwavering support of prayer, my son was fortunate to outgrow this terrible condition. His story is a testament to the critical importance of medicine and clinical trials, which bring knowledge and life-changing treatments to those in need. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the medical advancements that have transformed lives. Let’s support continued research and development that can offer hope to every individual affected by epilepsy. Please know not all epilepsy looks the same, so if something is not right with you or your love one please just trust your instincts and have it checked out! To all the families navigating this path, you are not alone.
