Happy International Women's Day! 💛 Over the years, I've had the privilege of working alongside some brilliant startup founders. Interestingly, the overwhelming majority were men. This observation sparked a question: where are the women founders? In an industry calling for greater diversity, it's noteworthy that women-led startups receive only 2.2% of venture capital funding each year. Yet, the impact of women in leadership roles within these startups is undeniable. It's great to see more startups helmed by women popping up around the globe, yet they still represent just a tiny fraction of the startup landscape. This trend spans every corner of the world, though some spots are doing a bit better than others. Take Central and Eastern Europe, for example—they're leading the charge in Europe with more women founders. But no matter where you look, men still dominate the founder scene. My experience working with talented women in various strategic roles has underscored their essential role in the success of their businesses. The data supports this too. Research indicates that startups with female leaders or founders often outperform their male-led counterparts. Mass Challenge and BCG found that women-run businesses generate higher revenues, delivering more than twice as much per dollar invested. Despite these compelling figures, women founders remain underrepresented and underfunded. We need to bridge this gap. Empowering and inspirational female leaders are reshaping the Finnish startup ecosystem, blazing a trail for women. ✨ While the startup scene, particularly in tech, has historically been male-dominated, we’re witnessing a shift. Women are now assuming influential roles within major organizations in the ecosystem. For instance, Maria 01 appointed its first female CEO, Sarita Runeberg, in 2023. Breaking through the proverbial glass ceiling to access capital equitably has been a major challenge for women founders. Accessing capital is such a major challenge for women founders, that they only accounted for 15% of US technology startups in 2022. With these concerning statistics top of mind, we recently hosted a panel of highly accomplished women founders in tech within our EY Women in Technology webcast series. 💪 Celebrating Women in Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship On this International Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible achievements and resilience of women in the entrepreneurial and business world.  Despite facing significant barriers, women continue to make remarkable strides in venture capital and entrepreneurship, contributing to innovation and economic growth. Here are some inspiring facts: 👏 Female-founded companies in the U.S. raised $44.4 billion (or 26%) out of the $170.59 billion in venture capital allocated in 2023, showcasing the increasing influence of women in the startup ecosystem. 👏 While challenges persist, women now lead 1 in 3 high-growth companies globally, demonstrating their impact on the entrepreneurial landscape. 👏  Women contribute to significant performance in startups, with founder teams with women being more likely to exit and have a higher IRR — 112% versus 48%.    Our celebration does not stop here.
