I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizers of the 4th Spanish Aviation Forum Aeropodium in Madrid, for inviting Repsol to participate in this prestigious event. It was an honor to be there to discuss such crucial topics for the future of aviation ✈️:
✅ Strategies to achieve net zero emissions: We discussed the initiatives and technologies we are implementing to reduce CO2 emissions in aviation.
✅ The use of #SAF in Spain: We explored how sustainable aviation fuels are being developed and utilized in our country, and the benefits this brings to the industry and the environment with the leadership of Repsol.
“Embracing Sustainable Aviation Fuel today is our commitment to a cleaner, greener tomorrow” ♻️
SAF is here...ACT NOW!

Revolutionizing the aviation sector, turning it into a model of environmental and economic #sustainability: this is the mission of our 3rd Annual Congress, which brought together key players, energy companies, academic world and institutions to “re-write” the rules of air transport, protecting the growth of the sector and fully reconciling it with the environment.
A unique alliance between 17 partners - sponsored by ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) - #PACTA Foundation aims at achieving the #NetZero Emissions goal by 2050, positioning Italy as a leader in the sustainable transition of air transport.
We put forward proposals including initiatives to push for the adoption of #SAF; to support research on new-generation aircraft; to stimulate investments in #greenenergy; to transform airports into sustainable hubs through the #decarbonisation of operating fleets, the facilitation of energy efficiency measures and the optimisation of air traffic; to promote #multimodality.
“Decarbonising aviation is a collective responsibility, and PACTA Foundation demonstrates that it is possible to address it with a systemic approach. Our policy proposals represent practical tools designed to support institutions in bridging the gap between ambitions and implementation. Flying less is not the solution, and sustainability is not a constraint: it is the key to a fairer future, in which environment and progress are part of the same strategic vision,” our Chairman Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, commented.
A special thanks to Hon. Galeazzo Bignami, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Pierluigi Di Palma, Chairman of ENAC and Chair of our Institutional Committee; Claudio Barbaro, Undersecretary to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security; Antonino Turicchi, Chairman of ITA Airways.
We also extend our gratitude to Carmela Tripaldi, Andrea Marotta, and Marco Trombetti for constantly being by our side in our development path.
Thanks to all Members and panelists:
Hon. Laura Cavandoli; Diego Montemurri, Marsh Advisory Italia; Marco Frey, Sant’Anna University, Pisa; Alfonso Celotto, AEROPORTI 2030; Davide Bassano, Save Group; Marina Bottelli, Swissport Italia; Edoardo Croci, Università Bocconi; Katia Riva, Mundys; Barbara Melotti, Bologna Airport; Fabio Sgroi, Italo - Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori ; Valerio Moro, Airbus Italia; Eleonora Agostinacchio, Enel; Fabrizio Penna, Head of the Mission Unit Department for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan - Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security; Mauro Rotelli, President of the VIII Environment Commission - Camera dei deputati; David Chiaramonti, Politecnico di Torino; Felice Simonetti, Eni; Ivan Bassato; Veronica Pamio; Andrea Bassanino and Francesco Calvi Parisetti, Roland Berger

1. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval process for aviation is deeply flawed and Safe Landing recently signed a critical letter written by Fossielvrij NL to the SBTi about these issues: https://lnkd.in/etiu57R5. Given the targets allow aviation emissions to grow over the rest of the decade... while we need to be halving emissions globally, it's very questionable to claim this can be aligned with the Paris Agreement 📈
2. Setting targets is one thing, taking action to actually achieve them is another, e.g. Ryanair has apparently set "an ambitious goal of using 12.5% SAF by 2030" (https://lnkd.in/e-UvNEue) but their own CEO, Michael O'Leary admits “I don’t see where we will get the supply in the volumes we need. You want everybody running around collecting f***ing cooking oil? There isn’t enough cooking oil in the world to power more than one day’s aviation.” (https://lnkd.in/ezMEVvuS) ⛽🛢️
✈️ Air New Zealand recently dropped their "SBTi aligned" Climate targets for 2030, and we expect Ryanair will need to follow suit as we approach closer to that date: https://lnkd.in/eY8X64i3
❓ Do Safe Landing followers believe Ryanair's sustainability strategy is aligned with the Paris Agreement?
❔ What do you think about the SBTi target setting process for aviation if this sort of thing is possible?
⁉️ If these targets are non-binding, don't require supporting plans demonstrating action towards those targets, and can be dropped at short notice if we think we're gonna miss the targets - then how should the SBTi be reformed, or what alternative means of triggering us towards genuinely urgent action NOW is needed??

Ryanair Emission Reduction Targets Approved by Science Based Targets initiative
We're delighted to announce the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has formally validated our near-term emission reduction target. Our Director of Sustainability and Finance, Thomas Fowler said: “Ryanair’s ambitious decarbonisation targets are underpinned by our increasing use of sustainable aviation fuel and new fuel-efficient aircraft entering the fleet. Last year, we reset our decarbonisation target following the order for 300 Boeing MAX-10 aircraft (21% more seats, 20% less CO2). We’re delighted that SBTi have agreed that this target is in line with the levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.”
The target conforms with the SBTi Aviation pathway and is classified in line with a 1.5° trajectory. This sees the Ryanair Group committing to reduce its carbon intensity by 27% by 2031. The target validation process was supported by Davy Horizons.
I don't often get to write about geese, but it's a good day when I do!
Delta Air Lines and Airbus have announced new sustainability collaborations to scale sustainable aviation fuel, evolve airframe designs for efficiency, create a new flying technique and even develop hydrogen aircraft.
“It’s estimated that 80% or more of the world’s population has never experienced air travel,” Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines said on stage at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.
“That’s why, as we continue to expand as an international airline, increasing the world’s access to travel isn’t just an opportunity – it's our responsibility."
Julie Kitcher, Airbus Chief Sustainability Officer and Communications, says: "With Delta we are redefining the future of aviation. By leveraging our combined expertise, we are accelerating groundbreaking innovations — from advancing cutting-edge flight techniques to scaling up the production of renewable fuels (SAF)."
I've put together an overview for our Sustainability Magazine readers.
