AgTech Ecosystem - particularly biological startups. Sharing a great post from Pam Marrone on progress around verification processes for biostimulants. While most of WG's efforts at the moment are on bio-controls (aka biopesticides - aka pesticide replacements), biostimulants are the lesser regulated side of biologicals and that can lead to challenges. Pam has been leading the charge on the need for transparency and pushing products through USDA's PVP program will help. 1) If you're in the biostimulant space and you are not familiar with PVP or planning on going through the process, please consider switching your path to help the entire industry establish more credibility. 2) If you're an investor getting pitched by biostimulant companies and you're not sure how to vet their claims (i.e. legit or bathtub brew), Pam would be a great place to start (and if she's busy, we've got others that can help you). We need to help investors new to the space with diligence, and we're raising our hands to say to investors "you've got a friend in biologicals that can help!" Exciting news from the Biological Products Industry Alliance meeting! Corteva Agriscience’s Terry Stone (incoming BPIA Chair) shared insights on the biostimulant panel, specifically the USDA Process Verification Program (PVP) shield for #biostimulants. Utrisha N was used as the first product to go through PVP. What is required? Verify the accuracy of cfu count and measure contaminants. Efficacy was verified through hundreds of field trials, ensuring the documentation that plants receive the necessary Nitrogen. Bacteria colonization is key to reaping the benefits, and a third-party lab verified colonization on the plant through a developed assay. The objective is to communicate aggregated figures to the European Commission and Member States to encourage development of a fit for purpose regulatory framework for such novel technologies. The continuation of the "need to know" principle for new #cropprotection technologies in the EU is key. The survey is entirely managed by Steptoe & Johnson LLP to keep the confidentiality.
