Obituary: Bindu Mohanty
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Bindu Mohanty, on July 28th in a hospital in Germany.
Bindu was a passionate environmentalist whose commitment to sustainable living was evident in her personal and professional life. She dedicated many years to teaching sustainable practices and actively participating in forestation efforts in Auroville. She actively engaged in community life and took on responsibilities in Auroville's governance.
Joining Auroville in 1994, Bindu later earned a PhD in Sri Aurobindo Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in 2008 with her thesis, “Spiritual Ideals and Social Psychology of Auroville: A Transdisciplinary Interpretive Inquiry.”
In 2021, Bindu began her dream job as Senior Coordinator (Research and Partnerships) at the Indian Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture Network (RRA N). She quickly became a vital and cherished team member, known for her warmth and unwavering dedication to supporting marginalised rainfed farming communities.
In 2023, Bindu travelled to Germany to be with her husband, Karl-Heinz. It was there that she was diagnosed with cancer.
We have lost a beloved co-traveler and friend. During her brief journey on this earth, Bindu inspired many with her work and passion.
May her legacy continue to inspire us all.
