Agrifood systems generate significant benefits to society, including the food that nourishes us and jobs and livelihoods for over a billion people. However, their negative impacts due to unsustainable business-as-usual activities and practices are contributing to climate change, natural resource degradation and the unaffordability of healthy diets. The State of Food and Agriculture 2023 looks into the true cost of food for sustainable agrifood systems. The report introduces the concept of hidden environmental, health and social costs and benefits of agrifood systems and proposes an approach – true cost accounting (TCA) – to assess them. Despite the preliminary nature of these estimates, the analysis reveals the urgent need to factor hidden costs into decision-making for the transformation of agrifood systems. #TheStateofFoodandAgriculture2023 #Revealingthetruecostoffoodtotransformagrifoodsystems

#Climatechange is disrupting global food trade, challenging food security and sustainability. Building resilient food systems while reducing the #environmental #impact of food transport is crucial. A study in Nature Food revealed that global food miles emissions are higher than previously thought, responsible for 3 billion tonnes of CO2 annually. High-income nations, only 12.5% of the world's population, cause 52% of international food miles and 46% of emissions. This highlights the need for targeted interventions in developed countries to cut the carbon footprint of food transport. To build resilience, we need to: 1. Diversify food sources: Spread risk by balancing domestic production and diversified trade. 2. Localise food systems: Shorter supply chains reduce climatic disruption losses. 3. Improve infrastructure: Invest in climate-resilient roads and railways. 4. Adopt climate-smart agriculture: Boost productivity while cutting emissions. Reducing environmental impact involves: 1. Optimising transport networks: Lighten freight to cut fuel consumption. 2. Shifting to sustainable transport: Use less carbon-intensive modes like boats. 3. Improving packaging: Use recyclable materials for a sustainable supply chain. 4. Promoting seasonal and local consumption: Combine local eating with seasonal produce to cut dietary emissions. Recent research highlights climate change's impact on food trade: - Higher temperatures and rainfall benefit exports but responses vary by region. - Climate-induced crop failures affect global food prices and availability. - Shorter supply chains preserve nutritional value in vegetables. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, businesses, and consumers, guided by research and innovation. #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #FoodSystems #Resilience #FoodTransport #CarbonFootprint #ClimateSmartAgriculture #LocalFood #SustainableTransport #SupplyChain #ClimateResilience #FoodMiles #GreenhouseGasEmissions #EcoFriendly #CircularEconomy #RenewableEnergy #EnvironmentalImpact #PolicyChange #SustainableDevelopment
