Our very own Leslie G. sheds light on the pressing issue of child hunger in NYC in a recent op-ed featured in amNewYork. As #NYC schools switch to summer break, many kids experience reduced access to nutritious meals, leaving families to face the challenge of providing additional meals for their children who heavily rely on free school meals. In a city where 23.5% of children live in food-insecure households—equating to over 416,000 kids struggling to access sufficient nutrition—support from food banks, summer programs, and soup kitchens becomes crucial. Despite the availability of resources, many eligible children miss out due to a lack of awareness or accessibility. It's imperative to enhance access to food assistance programs and resources, like those offered by Food Bank in partnership with community allies. "One in four parents struggled to provide sufficient food for their child in the past 12 months." Patrick, from our policy team, explains what we need from policymakers to protect families: 1️⃣ Establish a long-term plan for local crisis support after the Household Support Fund ends in March 2025. 2️⃣ Remove the two-child limit in Social Security, which disproportionately impacts larger families. 3️⃣ Implement an Essentials Guarantee in Universal Credit to ensure families can afford necessities like food and fuel. 4️⃣ Extend free school meals to all primary school children. 5️⃣ Address holiday hunger by continuing the Holiday Activities and Food Programme beyond March 2025. We need decisive action now to create a fairer future for all children. #EndChildPoverty #SocialPolicy

When we facilitate health convenings with communities throughout the country, nearly half say that food insecurity is their main concern. And summer can be one of the hardest seasons for children experiencing hunger. During summer months, school meals aren’t available, it can be hard for families to travel to access free meal programs, and food banks may simply not have enough of or the right kind of food children need. This crisis is preventable with the right resources and policy shifts: - Ensuring access to nutritious food for children even when they are not in school through programs like Summer EBT - Decreasing administrative barriers families face when applying for or accessing benefits CHF will continue to advocate for policies that help prevent the crisis of childhood hunger, over the summer and throughout the year, and we’re proud to support our national network partners who help families cope by connecting them to food access programs, emergency food pantries, and community gardens. Watch our recent webinar on summer hunger to learn more about this issue: https://lnkd.in/eTAh5WgU And visit ChildrensHealthFund.org to support our work advocating for policies to reduce hunger.

2024 is coming to a close, and it was a quite a year. For the Maryland Food Bank, it was a year of incredible partnerships, growth, and impact. By working together, we made meaningful strides toward addressing hunger in communities across the state... from expanding access to healthy meals to championing innovative programs, every success has been fueled by our shared commitment to a stronger, healthier state and to ending hunger for all Marylanders. Our mission has never been just about distributing food—it’s about building a state where no one has to choose between paying a bill and putting dinner on the table. That’s why we’ve worked tirelessly this past year to advocate for policies that do more than meet immediate needs, but that create lasting change. We were proud of our support to expand benefits for SNAP at the state level and the broadening of anti-poverty efforts in our state through the ENOUGH Initiative – an additional $20 million to fight poverty driven by communities’ lived experience. Looking ahead to the 2025 Maryland legislative session, we’re excited to deepen this work. We will be closely watching policy decisions at the state and federal level that can advance the accessibility of healthy food in schools, as well as the adding our voice to the chorus of those advocating to protect government programs that help seniors and working families get the nutritious food they need to thrive. We know that tackling hunger requires collaboration, innovation, and a relentless focus on solutions that work. We’ll continue partnering with policymakers, community organizations, and individuals to turn these priorities into realities. Together, we can create a state where opportunity, healthy choices, and hope are on every plate.

It’s that time of year – kids are heading back to school! Let’s talk about the crucial role the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) plays in feeding children across America. For many families, the start of the school year brings excitement, but it can also highlight the struggles of food insecurity. As Carla Ventura, a food pantry director and RESULTS Expert on Poverty, shares in her recent blog post, "I run a food pantry, but it's not enough. We need funding for SNAP. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless children and families this school year. " Read Carla's full blog here: https://lnkd.in/gVaPysUx SNAP is the nation’s most effective anti-hunger program, providing vital support to nearly 25% of U.S. children. It helps reduce hunger by approximately 30% and significantly improves educational and health outcomes for our kids. Carla’s experiences remind us that while food pantries play an important role in addressing immediate needs, government nutrition programs like SNAP should be the foundation of our fight against hunger. We must listen to voices from the community who are most directly impacted by these issues. Read Carla’s blog to understand why we need to strengthen this essential program and like this post to show your support for advocates like Carla.

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its annual report, Household Food Security in the United States in 2023, showing 1 in 5 children live in food insecure households. The following is a statement from Jason Gromley, Senior Director for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign: “This trend is going the wrong direction. Nearly 14 million kids now face hunger. To see childhood hunger grow again after last year’s staggering increase is tragic and shows we are still not doing enough to ensure children in America are well nourished and families have the resources to meet their most basic needs."
