We were outraged and saddened to read this article: https://lnkd.in/ejci5Apr While we understand that safety and risk of self-harm needs to be considered regarding all items at inpatient settings, no one should need to prove that their are on their period to have access to sanitary items! A person is likely to be feeling vulnerable on the ward already. The environment not only restrictive, it can also be noisy and chaotic so not exactly conducive to mental health recovery. There is certainly a lack of compassion regarding this situation. 💜 Image description: At the top is the title Period Poverty on Psychiatric Wards: Dignity Denied. Grateful for Quality Care Recently, I faced a mental health crisis and sought help. Unfortunately, my experience at a public hospital (Settlers Hospital) was marred by stigma and unprofessional bedside manner. Thankfully, a private hospital provided exceptional care, compassion, and expertise. Their swift intervention and tailored treatment made all the difference. I'm grateful to my mother for supporting my recovery and settling the bill for quality care. This experience highlighted: 1. Disparities in healthcare quality. 2. Importance of compassionate care. 3. Value of investing in mental health. Let's advocate for: 1. Improved public healthcare. 2. Reduced stigma around mental health. 3. Accessible, affordable quality care. #MentalHealthMatters #QualityCare #CompassionateHealthcare #PrivateHealthcare #MentalHealthAdvocacy #HealthcareReform

Marking #WorldMentalHealthDay, we recognise the challenges the mental health sector faces meeting ever-increasing demand with limited resources. While digital solutions aren't a panacea, there is more that can be done to enhance support for service users, helping them engage and self manage during their wait and throughout their treatment. Integrated into the NHS App and already collaborating with 15 mental health organisations across primary and secondary care, PKB’s key areas of support include: ✅ Digital access to appointments & letters ✅ Implementation of national programmes like Waiting List Validation with Waiting Well resources ✅ Care planning ✅ Questionnaires for PROMs to inform efficient decision-making and timely interventions Contact our PKB team to find out more and read about City and Hackney's innovative programme to coordinate multi-disciplinary support for SMI service users in the area 👇 https://lnkd.in/eJJnVZhd

Reflecting on the strides made in mental healthcare throughout 2023 fills us with hope and inspiration, especially as we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month. From policy changes in Congress supporting better reimbursements for licensed professionals to the increased recognition of the invaluable role played by peer-support specialists and community healthcare centers, our nation celebrated numerous accomplishments. Yet, amid these victories, a sobering reality remains—many Americans still grapple with limited access to crucial mental health care services. Despite our advancements in knowledge and advocacy for mental health treatment, the persistent shortage of qualified psychiatrists nationwide continues to hinder progress. As we move forward into 2024, let's build upon the momentum of 2023's achievements and redouble our efforts to address the root causes of mental health access challenges. Together, through continued collaboration, innovation, and dedication, we can ensure that every individual in need receives the compassionate and effective care they deserve. The erosion of funding for mental health patients has been announced, coinciding with Australians facing the highest rates of mental health illness. From post-COVID trauma, bushfire survivors, to recent crises like the Israel-Gaza war, the impact is widespread. Additionally, challenges persist for neurodiverse individuals and those with ASD, facing difficulties accessing essential services through NDIS. Disguised as "simplifying Medicare," these cuts exceed $150 million PER YEAR, impacting vital programs like Better Access. Data and statistics must not be overlooked; adequate mental health support is essential. It's crucial to stand against these funding cuts to ensure patients receive the care they urgently need. #MentalHealth #FundingCuts #BetterAccess #Protest Dr Nick Tellis Michael Clements Ian KAMERMAN Dan Halliday Dr Karyn M. Fixing Forensic Mental Health Care: Urgent Changes Needed In the UK, moving from inpatient to community care in the forensic mental health system has many problems. These issues make it hard for people to recover and reintegrate. Despite some efforts, big problems remain: Challenges: Lack of Resources: There aren’t enough resources and funding for community support, leaving many people without the help they need. Poor Infrastructure: The infrastructure to support safe and timely transitions is lacking and varies across regions, leading to inconsistent care. Inconsistent Support: Post-discharge support is often inconsistent and insufficient, increasing the risk of readmission and hindering long-term recovery. One-Size-Fits-All Care: Many care plans fail to fully respect individual needs, leading to a one-size-fits-all approach. Delayed Discharge Planning: Discharge planning is often delayed or poorly executed, resulting in rushed or uncoordinated transitions. Reluctance to Discharge: There is often a lack of willingness to discharge individuals into a chaotic and under-resourced system, delaying their reintegration. Lack of Trust: Building trust in the community is hard. Fear and stigma around forensic patients make it difficult for them to be accepted and supported. A Personal Story: I spent 20 years in the forensic system and faced these problems firsthand. The lack of support and resources made my transition to community living very hard. Also, fear and stigma in the community made it tough to build trust and feel accepted. But I believe in the strength and potential of every person to find their place in the world. Despite the system’s flaws, many of us strive to create our own destinies, showing incredible strength and determination. These issues show the urgent need for big changes. We must make sure people get the right care at the right time, in the right place. It’s time to fix these problems and work towards a better forensic mental health care system, one that truly helps people find their path and reach their potential. #MentalHealth #ForensicCare #HealthcareReform #CommunitySupport #InpatientToCommunity #Resilience #Destiny #DischargeToAssess #OxfordHealthNHS #PersonalGrowth #Response #Schizophrenia #EndTheStigma #Inspiration
