Its Hokey Cokey time in Scotland – with amateur golf’s governing body putting a workforce back in the field, with a return to boots on the ground to help our clubs. Golf is by no means the only industry to tinker with a field force. Large companies often move towards a regional sales force, then revert to centralisation, before ultimately heading back out in to the field again. So hats off to the new regime, and Andrew Baptie at Scottish Golf, for securing the support for a team of 5 Regional Development Officers. But how will success be judged this time ? And more importantly, what exactly do clubs want from this investment ? Clubs have a crucial role to play in identifying the gaps they have in their skillsets, and reaching out for help from their National Governing Body. Its not easy managing a region of over 100 golf clubs, and we have to be realistic about how much time each Development Manager can spend with each club, but lets not waste this opportunity of the support that is clearly out there. And what about the people who will fill these roles ? There will be some experienced Club Managers out there looking for a new challenge, and I can tell you that moving from the “micro” of club operations to the “macro” of overseeing a region of clubs of varying sizes, is a role I can thoroughly recommend. This is a perfect opportunity to let other clubs benefit from your time behind the wheel, be part of a much larger team and a truly meaningful movement designed specifically to help golf, and our Scottish golf clubs.

PGA of America Execusearch, please start looking out for PGA of America Members, the owners of the PGA of America. Questions they need answered before they agree to take a position: - How many assistants are on staff? - Is there a shop manager? - Are there shop attendants? - Are there starters? - Are there bagroom attendants? - Are there cart attendants? - Are there golf instructors on staff? - Are there course rangers? - Are there driving range attendants? Is this position and other golf staff positions paid fair wages when compared to similar clubs in the area? Is the person this position reports to okay with a delegation style of management, or is a hands-on approach preferable? You can state a compensation number for a position, but without the above questions answered, that job (like all the others PGA of America Execusearch posts) could be a nightmare or a dream. Is there a performance improvement plan policy in place? To prevent this position and other positions on the golf staff from being terminated without cause, which happens far too often in the golf industry? The PGA of America Members pay you and other Career Service Consultants well. Who holds PGA Career Service Consultants accountable? How are they held accountable? What KPIs must they meet or exceed on a weekly basis? Monthly basis? Annual basis? The PGA of America is not the federal government operating off a bottomless pit of taxpayer dollars. The revenue acquired from the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup is nice, but it should not be wasted. Honestly, why even have PGA Execusearch since there are so many companies in the industry that provide the same services.

After almost 8 months here, many golfers have asked me again, are you sure you have never managed a golf course before? I laughed and said, no, never before this. The reason they ask is because we had quadrupled our revenues within 3 months and has maintained that level with new heights of revenues every month, heights the owners found unbelievable because it was not done in in any golf course in this region before. Can we maintain it? For golf yes because our membership have gone from 57 club members eight months ago to 900 members as of today. That quadraple increase in revenues has been sustained for the past 3 months not by membership fees but by the increase in golfers playing, so the near term future looks pretty good, especially when the cycle of yearly term membership renewal comes again in a few months time. I am more comfortable in food and beverage management while specializing in the field of hotel revenue management. So I basically lead an entirely different team in an entirely different discipline I had zero knowledge of. I only learned how they calculate golf scores when I joined here 😅. So how did I turn the worst performing golf course in the region into the top 3 in the region? How? I looked at things from an entirely different view, an outsider looking in with new perspectives and focused on things no one else focused on. I think my most important decision was not removing even 1 person from the golf team. We grew from that and the team really became attached to me, because I was only interested in their success. That was the exact moment when I learned you can lead anyone, to do anything. It is naming a goal, helping to set steps towards the goal and supporting and guiding the team in their efforts. Knowing what effort is good or bad. Knowing how to blend personalities and talents. And no, it doesn't happen overnight and has to be done step by step, since there is so much rubbish to clear from the past.

𝐏𝐆𝐀 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲. Anybody that employs or manages within the golf industry knows that identifying candidates who bring proven expertise and tangible value to their roles is crucial. PGA Excel, the framework which offers recognition of those that have made a significant impact, is a sure way to assess this, providing clear evidence of PGA Members’ achievements in their chosen field. Doug McClelland, PGA Master Professional and founder of Europe’s biggest club retail store – Silvermere Golf & Leisure, in Surrey - is a strong advocate for PGA Excel and the benefit it provides to employers and golf facilities, as well as the individual. “Every PGA Professional and golf facility should want to make themselves the best they can be and The PGA are the best in the world as a training association at offering that chance,” he says. Progression through the framework is rewarded with higher designations - Advanced, Fellow, Advanced Fellow and Master apply to all three Member specialisms of PGA Professional, Coach and Manager. And as it becomes increasingly recognised across the industry, with higher designations leading to greater desirability among employers, McClelland believes that it’s critical to the success of PGA Members and the facilities they serve. TASK: The National Championships are starting soon, featuring 4 race categories numbered from 1 to 4. Chef is participating in exactly 2 of these categories. Chef's arch-rival, who is the only person Chef cannot defeat, is also participating in exactly 2 of the 4 categories. Chef aims to avoid competing in the same categories as his arch-rival. Given X and Y (the races Chef participates in) and A and B (the races the arch-rival participates in), determine the maximum number of gold medals Chef can win. The input consists of an integer T (number of test cases) followed by T lines, each containing four integers X, Y, A, and B. Output the maximum number of gold medals Chef can win for each test case.

🏌️♂️ Adapting to Adversity: Matt Kuchar's Unconventional Finish at the Wyndham Championship 🌧️ Professional golfer Matt Kuchar faced a tough decision at the Wyndham Championship when unfavorable weather conditions threatened to derail his progress. Rather than risk a subpar performance, Kuchar opted for a bold strategy: playing a 12-hole "Monday finish" instead of the traditional 18 holes on Sunday. 🤔 While some questioned the fairness of this approach, tournament officials ultimately gave Kuchar the green light. His creative solution allowed him to navigate the wet and soggy course more effectively, showcasing his adaptability and determination to succeed. 💪 Kuchar's story reminds us that sometimes, unconventional thinking can lead to better outcomes when faced with adversity. By staying flexible and open to new approaches, we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. 🎯 What do you think about Kuchar's decision? Have you ever had to adapt your strategy in the face of unexpected challenges? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! 📝 #MattKuchar #WyndhamChampionship #Adaptability #Resilience #Golfing

Ahhh. The Masters. If you have ever walked around Augusta National Golf Club, you get it. Not sure there is a more surreal moment than being there for the first time. As one friend put it, it is one of the few things in life that actually exceeds expectations. I always watched The Masters with my dad. And to him, and me, the ceremonial first shots were something to behold, The best of the best; truly legends. This year is no different as I watched the three of them tee off this morning. Such an emotional moment for any true golf fan. And yes, it brings back good memories of my dad. Great memories actually. I tell you this because in your career, you have many opportunities to "exceed expectations". In the sales game, it can be making your President's Club. Maybe it's Salesperson of the year. At The Reynolds and Reynolds Company, they literally handed out a jacket, not unlike The Masters. Maybe it's as simple as a thank you from one of your customers for fixing an issue. Remember, problems are really just an opportunity to be a hero. So today, forget the unimportant stuff. Tuck away the negative thoughts. Concentrate on only one thing: How do I exceed my customers' expectations. Do that, and you will truly be remembered as the best of the best. #GoldenBear #GaryPlayer #TomWatson #TheMasters #Salesexcellence #Bestofthebest

Slingin’ Beer On the Golf Course As a business leader, I love the email below! I’m so proud of my associate Marci Lucas! It was almost 6 years to the date when we re-connected. Marci worked with a client and participated in our sales development program in 1999. Six years ago, I was playing golf with a business colleague, and on hole number 4, the cart person rolled up and kinda skidded sideways on the wet pavement. She was so cool in her upscale golf attire and mirrored aviators. “Need anything, gentlemen?” I knew, I knew her from somewhere. I said, hey, I know you, but I can’t remember from where. She said, keep talking, I know that voice. (Like I always say, I have a great face for radio). In sync, I said, Marci Lucas VYP 1999, you were the best student I ever had. She said, Rocky LaGrone, you were our sales trainer in 1999. “It’s so good to see you. What are you doing these days?” I asked. In her candid, confident tone, she replies, “Slinging beer on the golf course. What does it look like?” Of course, I had to ask, “What would you like to be doing? Her answer was perfect. I’d like to put my kids on the bus, then come home and work and make a good deal of money, then go get my kids off the bus and enjoy my family. So we planned a lunch and the rest is history! Here is the email I received last week: From: XX Date: Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 1:13 PM To: Marci Lucas <Marci@salesdevelopmentexpert.com> Subject: Call Hello Marci, I hope the rest of your week is going well. I wanted to reach out sooner but well you know…. It has been a week. You are such a doll, and it was my pleasure getting to chat with you. I am looking forward to working with you on this project and learning more about SHARK and the hiring process as we start to recruit for our Director of Sales position. As you know I could have probably stayed on teams with you and chatted for hours. Thank you for making this process as smooth as possible for someone like me with zero sales experience. Thank you for the kind words to the team on the call on Tuesday. I appreciate that so much. If you need anything at all from myself or Sam just let us know. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week and have a great weekend. Sincerely, Client X Human Resources I can’t thank you enough Marci! Work is so much more fun with you on the team. Not to mention, we are so much more effective! I hope you decide to stay for another 16 years!

𝓟𝓖𝓐 𝓔𝔁𝓬𝓮𝓵: 𝓡𝓮𝓭𝓮𝓯𝓲𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓮𝓷𝓽 𝓪𝓬𝓺𝓾𝓲𝓼𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓲𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓰𝓸𝓵𝓯 𝓲𝓷𝓭𝓾𝓼𝓽𝓻𝔂 In what is a highly competitive employment landscape, the need to stand out against your peers has never been more pressing. For PGA Members and the facilities or companies that employ them, the Association’s flagship assessment framework – PGA Excel – is really proving its worth in this area, helping to progress careers, fill advanced positions and add genuine value. We spoke to John Blanch - General Manager of Loch Lomond Golf Club - while General Manager of Wentworth Club Ltd where he had around 20 PGA Members working across all areas of the facility. He cites PGA Excel as a key indicator for golf facilities looking for the highest quality candidates: “PGA Excel allows PGA Members to demonstrate their impact, achievement and what they’ve done in their career, so the golf facility is more likely to hire someone who has come through PGA Excel. It demonstrates further certification in what they’ve done with their career. I think it’s very important for golf clubs to understand what PGA Excel is, because when they do, they’re likely to hire the best people for the role.” More than 150 PGA Members have been awarded a new designation since the launch in 2022, with the new titles of Advanced, Fellow, Advanced Fellow and Master applying to all three Member specialisms of PGA Professional, PGA Coach and PGA Manager. It's been an interesting week after the Topgolf Callaway Brands "strategic alternatives" announcement and a few people reached out to me asking what is going on or I expect to happen there. Honestly, I don't really know. However, I do know Topgolf (and COVID) have been some of the biggest drivers of golf's growth over the last 5+ years. We look at golf as a progression for new golfers: 1️⃣ Topgolf - Entertainment Golf. Top of the funnel. Brings new people into the game. Is it really golf? 🤷♂️ 2️⃣ Golf Ranch - Golf Lite. The bridge. Give golfers of every skill level an accessible place to practice and play. Is it really golf? Toptracer is the same technology you see when you watch professional golf (and TMRW Sports / TGL)! 3️⃣ Golf Courses - Golf. The end point. Intimidating, difficult, frustrating... and the place every golfer aspires to be. For this reason (and golf as a whole), I hope either Callaway or whoever is the long-term owner of Topgolf is able to improve the business and continue investing in sustainable growth. Golf is in one of the healthiest positions it has been in a long time, and it will continue to evolve. We are excited to continue investing into the space to grow Golf Ranch.
