🌲 Did you know? Well-managed forests on the right kinds of soil can sequester and store carbon, effectively pulling damaging carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. 🌍 According to Yvonne Buckley (professor of Zoology at Trinity College Dublin), Ireland's journey from 1% to over 11% forest cover in the past century showcases progress and challenges. Promoting multifunctional and diverse forest mosaics can enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and provide recreational spaces. Continuous cover forestry maintains a forest canopy while selectively harvesting, ensuring soil protection and sustained carbon storage. To combat the impending "carbon cliff," we need to plant at least 8,000 hectares of forest annually to cover 18% of Ireland's land by 2050. This ambitious goal requires substantial investment in both public and private forestry sectors. #latestactivities Exploring sustainable forestry and bioenergy practices: Lessons from IUFRO World Congress The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Congress, recently held in Stockholm, dedicated a full day to immersive excursions showcasing Sweden's innovative forestry management and bioenergy production systems. Participants, ranging from 50 to 100 global attendees, converged in Södertälje, an hour south of Stockholm, for a day of insightful exchanges. Structured around four educational stops, the day commenced with live demonstrations of forest management and biomass collection techniques by Stora Enso and researchers from Skogforsk. These demonstrations highlighted Sweden's efficient use of residual biomass in heating and electricity sectors, crucial for sustainable energy practices. At subsequent stops, participants engaged in live demonstrations of logging residue chipping and delved into forest fuel logistics. Experts from Stora Enso and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) elucidated on fuel assortment, production, storage, and quality control, emphasizing Sweden's comprehensive approach to bioenergy systems. A conservação por si só não protegerá os nossos ecossistemas florestais. Como sou um nerd em árvores, passei a noite lendo o caso de investimento para projetos baseados em SFM (SFM sendo Manejo Florestal Sustentável) de Formulário Internacional e Fundação Florestas Preciosas. Com o aumento da procura global de madeira para construção e de recursos florestais, é necessário mais investimento para garantir que as florestas de produção sejam geridas de forma sustentável. Especialmente porque apenas cerca de 10% das florestas comerciais nos trópicos são geridas desta forma. Michael Schuurman também escreveu um artigo interessante defendendo tais investimentos em África. Conservation alone won't protect our forest ecosystems. Because I'm a tree nerd, I spent my evening reading the investment case for SFM-based projects (SFM being Sustainable Forest Management) from Form International and Precious Forests Foundation. With global demand for construction wood and forest resources increasing, more investment is required to ensure production forests are managed sustainably. Especially since only around 10% of commercial forests in the tropics are managed this way. Michel Schuurman also wrote an interesting article making the case for such investments in Africa. The National Eco-Security System (NESS) International Science Network, Haikou Forestry Bureau, and Hainan Normal University, together with the other 22 co-organizers, sponsored the first #NESS International Science Congress and Workshop on An Eco-Security System for All People in Haikou, Hainan Province, China, between 18th and 19th November, 2022. 202 experts and scholars from 156 institutions in 26 countries including Togo, attended the onsite-online hybrid meetings and reached the following consensus on the keynote of jointly building “An Eco-Security System for All People”. Several global reports warn that the current global ecological crisis has severely threatened the long-term survival of human beings. The opposition, conflict, and social division caused by various factors make it difficult for human beings to gather strength and unite to deal with the deteriorating ecological disaster. Humanity has once again found themselves standing at a crucial crossroads. At the 2017 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to the international community a Chinese plan: “Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind (CSFM) to achieve win-win sharing”. The concept of building a CSFM has been written into many resolutions of the UN and is recognized and endorsed by more and more countries.
