Development of diagnostic tool highlights the benefits of biosecurity collaboration and builds our biosecurity capability.
A national diagnostic protocol for Pine-wood / Pine wilt nematode has been developed to enable Australian diagnostic laboratories to diagnose this threatening National Priority Plant Pest.

The Pine wilt nematode is a microscopic unsegmented worm that affects firs, cedars, larches, spruces, and especially pines. It would be damaging to Australia’s forestry industry and structural timber supplies and amenity trees in our streets, parks and public gardens.
The Pine-wood National Diagnostic Protocol builds our toolkit to be able to identify exotic pests before they cause damage to our environment and supports the efforts of the Forest Watch Australia program.

Funded through the Commonwealth's Rural R&D for Profit program the protocol was developed in collaboration with CSIRO and the National Plant Biosecurity Diagnostic Network, a collection of Federal, State and industry plant pest diagnostititians working together to improve Australia's diagnostic capability.
