Recent legislative proposals in Slovakia aimed at amending the existing Deposit Return System (DRS) have raised concerns within the recycling industry. These amendments, proposed by Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba, could potentially impact the system's effectiveness and its alignment with both Slovak and EU legislative standards. Since its launch in 2022, Slovakia's DRS has exemplified success, achieving over 90% collection rates for single-use beverage packaging in 2023, significantly surpassing EU targets ahead of schedule. This initiative has not only boosted recycling rates but also reduced environmental litter, setting a benchmark for similar initiatives across Europe. However, the proposed changes, which suggest an increase in state oversight, have alarmed key industry stakeholders, including EUROPEN, the Brewers of Europe, and Zero Waste Europe. These organisations have voiced their concerns through a joint letter, calling for the withdrawal of the draft amendments and advocating for a more collaborative approach to preserve the system's integrity and ensure its continued success. Here is a much more sustainable idea to overcome the issues that plastic bottles and lids create. Including plastic lids that separate when opened. The answer, sustainable digitally printed aluminium cans that are 100% recyclable (add to this that plastic bottles have adhesive labels or shrink sleeves added to the plastic bottle) -Aluminium cans significantly reduce environmental waste, -Eradicates marine life from swallowing plastic lids, -The process minimises energy consumption. —> There you have it, problem solved! NB: Finally, every 1 million direct printed aluminium cans removes 1.1 million tonne of single use plastic in the form of self adhesive labels and shrink sleeves from the supply chain. What’s the deal with bottle tops not fully detaching? Although bottle caps have always been recyclable - yes, really.. most people discarded them so Coke devised this new innovation. Confusing at first, the cap is now fully attached and already dramatically reducing waste. Not only caught on with other soft drinks it’s even now becoming EU law. Expected to prevent 10% of plastic litter found on European beaches. One day we’ll reminisce about the days when bottle tops came off… who even remembers those metal can ring pulls that also came off?! #productinnovation
