The 2023 VINFUTURE GRAND PRIZE, valued at US$3 million, is awarded to four scientists: Prof. Martin Andrew Green (Australia), Prof. Stan Whittingham (United States), Prof. Rachid Yazami (Morocco), and Prof. Akira Yoshino (Japan) for their breakthrough inventions in creating a sustainable platform for green energy through production with solar cells and storage with Lithium-ion batteries. The combination of these transformative projects spearheaded a revolution in sustainable green energy solutions for the modern world. Prof. Martin Green and his research team pioneered the Passive Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) technology, elevating energy conversion efficiency from 15% to an impressive 25%. These advancements deliver exceptional utilities, even in regions with limited sunlight conditions. Since its mass production in 2012, PERC solar cells have commanded a significant 60% share of the global solar cell market. Meanwhile, the advent of Lithium-ion battery storage has extended the reach of energy consumption across all geographical regions and socioeconomic classes, providing widespread access to green and sustainable energy solutions. Lithium-ion batteries power 15 billion mobile devices and 26 million electric vehicles globally, thanks to the work of outstanding scientists: Prof. Stanley Whittingham, Prof. Rachid Yazami, Prof. Akira Yoshino, and the late Prof. John Goodenough. The award ceremony also paid tribute to and honored the late Prof. John Goodenough – a pioneering scientist whose invention enabled Lithium-ion batteries to be safely rechargeable for the first time, improving the efficiency and saving resources. The synergy of these two groundbreaking technological revolutions has promoted the widespread adoption and accessibility of clean energy in our everyday lives through the conversion of solar energy into electricity by PERC solar cells and storage by Lithium-ion battery. Yesterday's #ISTPColloquium had the privilege of hosting Professor Kavita Surana! Her talk, "Accelerating Innovation in the Global Value Chains of Clean Energy Technologies," offered deep insights into achieving climate and economic goals through innovation and green policy. Professor Surana highlighted three key policy issues: modernizing energy systems, securing supply chains, and accelerating innovation. She discussed the critical role of policy in shaping innovation and manufacturing, especially as global manufacturing locations shift. Focusing on the wind energy sector, she mapped the global value chain, revealing the relationships between suppliers and OEMs. Her research showed that while new manufacturing hubs emerge, high-complexity innovations remain concentrated in developed countries or large markets like China and India. Her findings stressed the need for comprehensive policy mixes that integrate climate, energy, and industrial goals, and tailored policies based on the maturity of technology or industry. Thank you, Kavita, for an enlightening session on the complexities and opportunities in clean energy innovation. I had the opportunity to present my poster on social tipping dynamics in the energy transition at the ENAC Research Day 2024 at EPFL. Our study focused on the City of Pully, a "Cité de l'énergie" with ambitious targets for solar PV, energy consumption, and GHG emissions. We found that while initial technical measures like heat pumps and battery storage are essential to kick-start the transition, their long-term success depends on sociocultural factors. Enhancing perceived viability, leveraging peer effects, and boosting public awareness are crucial for driving sustained, transformative changes towards sustainability 🌱🌍

This week U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) hosted a workshop seeking input on the pathways to decarbonizing industries. ‼️A key fact framing the workshop was that 60% of emissions reduction needed to achieve net-zero in heavy industries by 2050 will come from technologies that don’t yet exist or are in the development pipeline. 📣 IEDO announced the launch of a new vision study looking at the barriers, pathways, frameworks and sector-specific solutions to scaling decarbonization in the industrial sector, building on DOE’s industrial decarbonization roadmap and commercial liftoff reports. It was wonderful to join colleagues from across industry, academia, and civil society (including our friends at Great Plains Institute) at the workshop to discuss challenges and solutions that will feed into the study. Those who weren’t there can still engage by responding to a Request for Information to inform the study (deadline June 10th). https://lnkd.in/eU9wRvUy I’m looking forward to continued engagement and the findings of this study that has the potential to frame U.S. industrial decarbonization priorities for the next few decades.
