As the holidays beckon, there’s a less-discussed yet significant issue impacting holiday travel - airline fraud. Kristian Gjerding, CEO of our client CellPoint Digital, highlighted the alarming rise of fraud and its impact on travelers and airlines alike in a recent Forbes interview with Marisa Garcia. The airline industry is a major target, accounting for nearly 46% of all fraudulent online transactions. This isn't just a number; it translates to a staggering loss of over $1 billion annually, affecting airlines, travelers and legitimate agents. The discussion in Forbes brings to light the creative and increasingly sophisticated methods employed by fraudsters, from exploiting flight disruptions to advanced AI tools, making fraud detection and prevention more challenging than ever. Particularly alarming are the tactics used during holiday travel chaos - setting up fake airline customer service numbers and websites to exploit travelers needing assistance. This compromises personal financial information and leads to invalid tickets and potentially stranded passengers. Gjerding stresses the importance of vigilance and using secure payment methods. His advice for travelers? Always opt for credible sources and safeguard transactions, whether booking flights or managing loyalty points. And for airlines? They should have a “holistic view of payments through a centralized platform to protect themselves and their customers. Travel Smart and Stay Safe this Spring Break : Tips to Avoid Fraud on Your Trip A lot of Canadians are expected to travel in 2024, with half of us planning at least one trip and 11% of us already having one booked. Whether you're soaking up the sun, escaping overseas or exploring a new city, it's important to be aware of potential fraud and take steps to protect yourself. For this week’s Fraud Tip Friday, here are some tips for reducing the risk of fraud while travelling: 1. Look out for fake websites. Fraudsters create websites that look like legitimate travel companies. Double-check the URL before inputting your personal information and paying for anything. A secure website URL will usually start with "https://" instead of just “http://”. 2. Tell your card issuer you’re travelling. This way, they won’t flag unfamiliar transactions. Additionally, make sure you know your card’s daily ATM withdrawal limit, expiration date, account balance, and available funds. 3. Monitor your accounts regularly. Enable transaction alerts on your credit or debit card so that you can keep track of expenses and be alerted in real-time if there is any fraudulent activity. Contact your financial institution immediately if you see something you don't recognize. As always, with Visa’s Zero Liability policy, you won’t be liable for any fraudulent transactions. 4. Use secure payment methods. When making purchases, use a chip-enabled credit card whenever possible. Chip cards offer an extra layer of security compared to traditional magnetic stripe cards and for smaller purchases, consider using contactless payments like tap to pay. 5. Be cautious about using public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks can be a breeding ground for hackers. If you must use public Wi-Fi, avoid accessing sensitive information such as your bank account or credit card details, and use a VPN to help encrypt your data.
