Courage. The act of this single word transformed a cowardly lion into a loving force in The Wizard of Oz. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I’m reminded of how tough it can be to be courageous sometimes. In my business, there have been times when I’ve gone ’round and ‘round with myself, feeling trepidation by the thought of “what if.” I ask myself, “What if I fail?” I may say, “What if this won’t work.” Then I know I must collect myself and muster the courage to forge ahead, even when the outcome is uncertain. I might have stolen the show as the Wicked Witch of the West when I was 11, but... ...little did I know that I would experience my first suicidal thoughts less than a year later. When was the last time you chatted to a work colleague or someone in your team in person? It's Mental Health Awareness Week this week and I know, for myself, that the greatest tonic for me if I'm struggling is to speak to a friend or colleague. Usually that's over the phone but I much prefer an in person chat over coffee. Remember, not everyone shows their emotions so openly, some people are naturally calmer, quieter & more reflective and won't necessarily come forward. So watch for the signs - is someone in your team or organisation showing up differently at the moment? If so, reach out, go for a coffee, in person if you can and show them you care. Trigger Warning - Long Post On Mental Health. . "Are you Okay?" when was the last time someone asked you this question? or you asked anyone in your circle of family , friends and professional connections? We are busy in congratulating people in promotions, increments, elevations that we forget to ask other people if they are okay.. we have mastered the art of pretending to be doing fine and well on the outside whereas we do find people of achievements crumbling down inside with pressure, agony, burden of proving their best everyday but no one to communicate how they are feeling from inside..with more communication through just a single message of "Howdy?" we have lost the charm and grace to give our time to someone... we intentionally ignore the relevancy lending someone our ears, time and most importantly our patience... In this fast pace of competition, I do fear in the coming times , human race will be only concerned with people who benefit each other only monetarily and to live , feed and grow only on factors riding through their brains and not their heart. It is important not to forget that we should be kind, affectionate and humble to people around us . So next time when you see someone who is at their lows dont forget to ask " Hi! How ya Doing?
