SDG 15: How can businesses balance profit and environmental conservation? 🌏🌳 Many believe that protecting biodiversity and restoring land are issues for environmentalists, not businesses. But the truth is, our planet's health is inextricably linked to economic prosperity. SDG 15: Life on Land calls for a radical shift in how we do business. From sustainable supply chains to land restoration projects, there are countless opportunities for businesses to thrive while contributing to a healthier planet. Companies like Patagonia have shown us that it's possible to balance profit with purpose. Let's build a future where business success is measured not just by the bottom line, but by its positive impact on the world! #SDG15 #LifeOnLand #sustainability #business #environment #Patagonia

Meet Lucie! 👋 This #NetZeroWeek, we're shining a light on our amazing team who are helping us achieve our net zero goals. As a Nature Positive Policy Advisor, Lucie is passionate about protecting our environment. She works hard to deliver policies that ensure we have a positive impact on the natural world. We caught up with Lucie to find out more about her role 🌱 "As Nature-Positive Policy Advisor I support the Natural Resources team in figuring out how the water company can deliver new environmental policies and regulations in the next business plan to 2030. I research and report on nature-based sequestration opportunities to support Pillar 3 of our Net Zero Plan and scope synergies with delivery of Ofwat's new Biodiversity Performance Commitment. Nature-related investments are rising up the agenda of priorities because they are key to realising multiple outcomes at once for the business, environment and communities. Through my eyes Net Zero goes hand-in-hand with becoming a nature positive business, as almost any investment in restoration of natural processes results in carbon sequestration in the long-term. Top tip: grow your own pesticide-free food (using peat free compost) or source a local organic veg box to reduce food miles – if you don’t have an outdoor space you can use, look up ways to get involved in gardening in your local community maybe even seagrass planting at your local shoreline. It’s not just trees that lock away carbon in the soil!" #netzero #sustainability #meettheteam

🚨 We are currently facing the largest known mass extinction, driven primarily by human activity, with species disappearing at a rate 10,000 times faster than the natural rate. This urgent situation demands immediate action. Every lost species is a vital component of our planet's biodiversity, and its absence affects ecosystems and human well-being. At Natural Distinction, we are committed to addressing this crisis by collaborating with businesses to implement sustainable practices, reduce environmental impact, and support conservation efforts. It's time for all of us to take responsibility and initiate change. Whether it's reducing plastic waste, supporting conservation projects, or adopting eco-friendly habits, every effort counts. Together, we can slow down the rate of extinction and preserve Earth's incredible biodiversity. 3 bits of biodiversity news from last week 🗞️ See these, and more stories on our blog: www.kuyua.com/blog One: ⚖ EU lawmakers have reached a provisional agreement on new sustainable packaging rules targeting 100% recyclable packaging by 2030. The legislation aims to reduce packaging waste, with measures including reduction targets, bans on some single-use plastic formats, and mandates for reusable packaging. Key updates to the initial proposal include exemptions for compostable plastic packaging and a ban on PFAS in food contact packaging. Formal approval is pending from the Council and Parliament. Read about it here: https://lnkd.in/gu2VF7pH Two: 📈 S&P Dow Jones Indices launches S&P Biodiversity Indices, expanding its sustainability-focused benchmarks for asset managers. These new indices, including the S&P 500 Biodiversity Index and S&P Global LargeMidCap Biodiversity Index, aim to measure the performance of equities aligned with environmental and biodiversity objectives. Leveraging data from S&P Global Sustainable1, the indices integrate biodiversity, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and carbon datasets to support ecologically conscious investment decisions. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g3YQqdfk Three: 📃 SEC approves new climate disclosure rules for US public companies, requiring reporting on climate risks, mitigation plans, and financial impacts. While scaling back from initial proposals, the rules mandate disclosure of severe weather impacts and emissions from direct operations, with no requirement for Scope 3 emissions. The move follows significant feedback, aiming to balance reporting burdens while aligning with global sustainability efforts. NATURE BASED SOLUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. One nature-based solution for sustainable development is the restoration and protection of forests. Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They also provide a wide range of ecosystem services such as clean air and water, biodiversity conservation, and soil protection. By promoting sustainable forest management practices, implementing reforestation and afforestation projects, and combating deforestation and illegal logging, we can ensure the long-term health and resilience of forests. This not only helps to address climate change but also contributes to the socio-economic development of local communities that depend on forests for their livelihoods. Additionally, nature-based solutions such as green infrastructure, sustainable agriculture practices, and coastal ecosystem restoration can help to address a range of environmental and societal challenges while supporting sustainable development goals. By harnessing the power of nature and working in harmony with the natural world, we can create a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for all. Plant a Tree today and save our world. 🙏🥦🌿🌱🍃🥑🍅🍊🥭🥝🍏🍠🍌🌽🍈🍓🌶️🍐🍉🧅🌍

Happy World Environment Day! We celebrate World Environment Day today. The earth is getting warmer and warmer due to human activity. What would you do to protect the environment? Protect the environment to support sustainable agriculture and biodiversity. Here are our top tips from the @UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) for you. 1. Reduce, reuse and recycle to slash the plastic waste ending up in our ocean. 2. Participate in growing trees along streets to lower the maximum temperature in cities by up to 5 degrees Celsius. 3. Buy local to support local farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 4. Let’s have more gardens in urban areas. 5. Volunteer time and labour and contribute to the rehabilitation of degraded landscapes and ecosystems. 6. Pressure elected officials at all levels of the government to enact policies that support ecosystem restoration and conservation. 7. Collect kitchen waste to use as compost in gardens or balconies or contribute to composting schemes 8. Learn about sustainable agriculture practices that preserve soil health, retain water and minimize erosion. The bonus, 😉 support RDF to fund and build capacity for sustainable agriculture. 🙌 #EnvironmentDay #TakeAction

We are committed to preserving and regenerating nature by responsibly sourcing materials, managing forests and operations sustainably, and reducing water usage. Our targets for 2025 include improving biodiversity in our forests, implementing biodiversity programs in our paper mills, and having water management plans at all our paper mills and packaging sites. Colleagues at our Coullons paper mill, in France, planted three flower meadows at the entrance of the mill, including a variety of 15 plant species to help support biodiversity by attracting new varieties of insects. The insects can take shelter in a new insect house, which the team built from scratch using recycled materials. At our other French paper mill in Kaysersberg, 15 colleagues constructed two insect houses in collaboration with the local environmental protection association, Sentinelle Nature Alsace. The insect houses were placed on two newly planted flower meadows at the mill entrance, allowing the insects to easily access food from the flowers. This focus on how we work with nature is one of the many reasons I love being part of the DS Smith team. It's part of our core values and that means it's a real focus. It's just what we do! #thepowerofless #packaging #sustainability
