🌟 We're shining a spotlight on the Rainforest Alliance's Forests Lead, Emmanuelle Berenger, who spoke at the panel “The Power of Trees: Preserving Forest Biodiversity” during the #ChangeNOW2024 sustainability summit a couple weeks ago! Some key takeaways that emerged from her discussion include: 🌳 Protecting standing forests is the most effective way to preserve forest biodiversity, and the best guardians of forest are the local communities who rely on them for their livelihoods and have developed a strong connection with nature. 🌿 While these communities are critical to protecting and restoring forests, they need to have the resources, ownership, and support to be able to do that. Investing in capacity building for managing locally-controlled forests can help communities develop the skills and social resources needed to protect their territories and lands after they have gained rights. 🌱 Reforestation can also be a powerful tool to accelerate restoration of biodiversity in highly degraded areas, and the best way to ensure reforestation efforts are effective is to ensure communities have a leading role in it, alongside ensuring a living wage from their farms. #RainforestAlliance ChangeNOW #WeAreAllIn #ChangeNOW #Sustainability #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #Biodiversity #ProtectForests #StandingForests #Reforestation

Life on Land: A Sustainable Future The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15, "Life on Land," is a critical endeavor to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. This goal recognizes the profound interdependence between humans and the natural world, and the urgent need to address the escalating threats to biodiversity and land degradation. One of the most pressing challenges facing life on land is the loss of biodiversity. The rate at which species are disappearing is unprecedented in human history, driven by factors such as habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. Biodiversity is essential for the functioning of ecosystems, providing services like pollination, pest control, water filtration, and climate regulation. Its loss threatens the stability of our planet and the well-being of countless species, including our own. Another significant concern is land degradation. Deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, and unsustainable agricultural practices are all contributing to the deterioration of our planet's land resources. Land degradation has severe consequences for food security, water availability, and climate regulation. It can lead to poverty, displacement, and social unrest. To achieve SDG 15, it is imperative to adopt a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of these challenges. This includes: Protecting and restoring ecosystems: Establishing and managing protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, is crucial for conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services. Additionally, efforts to restore degraded ecosystems, through reforestation and habitat rehabilitation, are essential for reversing the loss of land resources. Promoting sustainable land management practices: Encouraging sustainable agriculture, forestry, and land use planning can help to reduce the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. This involves adopting practices such as agroforestry, precision agriculture, and sustainable forest management. Addressing climate change: Climate change is a major driver of biodiversity loss and land degradation. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change are essential for protecting life on land. Promoting awareness and education: Raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity and land conservation is crucial for fostering a sense of responsibility and driving positive action. Education programs can empower individuals and communities to make informed choices and contribute to sustainable development. Achieving SDG 15 requires a global effort involving governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and individuals. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient future for life on land. #Lpu #sdgs #Article

On this International Day of Forests, we've updated our Deforestation Impact Rankings for 2024....and it pulls no punches. 🌲 Forests are not just carbon sinks; they're the backbone of biodiversity, water sources, and livelihoods for millions as our video shows.....the stakes couldn't be higher. In our ranking, we unveil the best and worst companies perceived for corporate deforestation impacts. ⚠️ JBS, Blackrock, and Michelin are spotlighted for their damaging footprint in deforestation-heavy sectors. Despite their green promises, their actions tell a different story. Conversely, Nestle, Unilever, and Barry Callebaut emerge as frontrunners, working towards more sustainable sourcing and working towards reducing their deforestation impacts. But as usual, more can be done.... Permutable AI's cutting-edge sentiment analysis exposes the harsh reality behind corporate sustainability claims. With a rigorous methodology, the ranking provides a crystal-clear picture of who's actually contributing to a greener planet and who's merely playing lip service. As Wilson Chan, our CEO & Founder puts it, "Our ranking is more than just numbers. It's a call to action for corporations to align their practices with their environmental promises." 🔗 See our 2024 rankings here: https://lnkd.in/eyAwEZVG This International Day of Forests, let's demand more than just words. In today's world, environmental sustainability is not just a buzzword; it's an ethical responsibility and a business imperative. As organizations, we must balance our growth and operations with the need to protect and conserve biodiversity, which is the foundation of a healthy and thriving ecosystem. 🌱 EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Management for Biodiversity is about: Conducting comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments to understand the potential impacts of our projects on local ecosystems. Embracing sustainable land use practices and protecting critical habitats for endangered species. Implementing rigorous pollution control measures to prevent harm to the environment. Managing invasive species and restoring ecosystems to their natural balance. Engaging with local communities, NGOs, and government agencies to foster collaboration and support for conservation efforts. By integrating these practices into our operations, we not only fulfill our ethical duty but also reduce risks, enhance reputation, and create a more sustainable and resilient future for our businesses. 🌍 Let's commit to being responsible stewards of our planet. Together, we can make a positive impact and leave a legacy of biodiversity preservation for future generations. #EHSManagement #BiodiversityConservation #Sustainability #EnvironmentalResponsibility #LanganEHS 🌎

Tetra Pak commits to taking action for nature News from Lausanne, Switzerland: Ahead of the United Nations’ International Day of Biodiversity on 22nd May, Tetra Pak has launched its ‘Approach to Nature’—a comprehensive framework dedicated to halting and reversing nature loss and enhancing water security. This initiative aligns with global targets, including those outlined in the Biodiversity Plan, which aims to halt biodiversity loss and set nature on a recovery path for the benefit of all life on Earth. Gilles Tisserand, Vice President Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, stated: “With over half of the world’s GDP heavily reliant on nature, the stakes could not be higher. Our ‘Approach to Nature’ not only reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship but also builds on our longstanding action in this domain, cemented by our inclusion in the 2023 CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year and the achievement of an A- in Water Security for our first year of reporting. As other companies join us on this journey, together we can help protect and restore nature for the generations to come.” Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature, remarked: “Tetra Pak's 'Approach to Nature' marks an important milestone, emphasizing how the corporate world must step up to support the ambitious targets of the Biodiversity Plan. We encourage all companies to set a nature strategy—a clear plan for how they will contribute towards a nature-positive future by 2030. However, businesses can't achieve this alone; governments must create the right incentives to speed up corporate action to address #nature loss." Tetra Pak has set 25 ambitious targets, including ensuring that by 2025, 100% of its raw materials with the most significant land footprint will originate from certified or controlled sources, and by 2030, achieving a 50% reduction of water use in best practice processing lines compared to 2019. Meet Lucie! 👋 This #NetZeroWeek, we're shining a light on our amazing team who are helping us achieve our net zero goals. As a Nature Positive Policy Advisor, Lucie is passionate about protecting our environment. She works hard to deliver policies that ensure we have a positive impact on the natural world. We caught up with Lucie to find out more about her role 🌱 "As Nature-Positive Policy Advisor I support the Natural Resources team in figuring out how the water company can deliver new environmental policies and regulations in the next business plan to 2030. I research and report on nature-based sequestration opportunities to support Pillar 3 of our Net Zero Plan and scope synergies with delivery of Ofwat's new Biodiversity Performance Commitment. Nature-related investments are rising up the agenda of priorities because they are key to realising multiple outcomes at once for the business, environment and communities. Through my eyes Net Zero goes hand-in-hand with becoming a nature positive business, as almost any investment in restoration of natural processes results in carbon sequestration in the long-term. Top tip: grow your own pesticide-free food (using peat free compost) or source a local organic veg box to reduce food miles – if you don’t have an outdoor space you can use, look up ways to get involved in gardening in your local community maybe even seagrass planting at your local shoreline. It’s not just trees that lock away carbon in the soil!" #netzero #sustainability #meettheteam
