A group of forward-thinking organisations, including South West Water, has won Gold in the 2024 Global Good Awards for its work to restore peatlands across the region. The South West Peatland Partnership works collaboratively across Exmoor, Dartmoor and Cornwall to restore, celebrate and positively shape the future of peatland – a vital ecosystem. The awards recognise organisations and leaders who are achieving practical, real-world impact for people and the planet that is both scalable and replicable, and who have inspiring stories to tell. We’re delighted that our work is being recognised on a global stage! https://lnkd.in/e5J9QEqt #PeatlandPartnership #GlobalGoodWards #Peatlands
About us
South West Water is part of Pennon Group plc. We provide reliable, efficient and high quality drinking water and waste water services throughout Cornwall and Devon and in small areas of Dorset and Somerset. We also look after the region's bathing waters and coastline. South West Water came into being in 1989 with the privatisation of the water industry. We inherited a water system suffering from a century of neglect but, thanks to the tireless work of our 1,300 employees, have brought the region's drinking water, sewerage systems and bathing waters into line with the stringent UK and European Union standards. This extensive programme of environmental improvement has resulted in some of the finest bathing waters in Europe, picturesque scenery and clean rivers with stunning wildlife. We believe that by investing in the future of our region, we are not only improving the quality of life for today's residents and visitors but are also taking responsibility for future generations.

This month is #Unblocktober, a national campaign about how we can all protect our drains and the environment from damage. Fats, oils and greases can form together in our network, pumping stations and treatment works to create blockages and fatbergs, which can cause havoc. It’s estimated that 200,000 wet wipes are flushed down our region’s toilets each day. Last year we spent £3 million fixing over 6,400 blockages, of which 75% were caused by wipes and fats. To combat this, we've worked with ECAS to successfully stop 370,000 litres of fats, oils and greases (FOG) from entering our sewers over the past 20 months. Marcus Brown’s introduction to invasive non-native species (INNS) started 15 years ago while managing a nature reserve at one of the wastewater treatment works he operated. It was during this time that Marcus discovered Himalayan balsam growing rapidly on a nature reserve at Crediton sewage treatment works which was smothering other vegetation on the site 🌱 Now an Invasives Training and Awareness Officer, Marcus worked hard over 3 years to successfully eradicate the species from the site. His years of experience and passion for environmental conservation have helped drive our proactive approach in combating this threat. Watch the video below to find out more about the work Marcus is doing to tackle INNS. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e6QeaUqu

“I’m proud to be part of the team making significant changes to how our sites operate. The improvements we’ve installed at Beals Mill have already made a huge difference to the site’s treatment process and its environmental performance." Our team has successfully upgraded the Beals Mill site to reduce storm overflows and improve wastewater treatment - this means cleaner water for local communities and the River Inny. Using innovative techniques like computer modelling and CCTV surveys to identify and address issues, we're ensuring that we take the most effective steps to protect the environment around us. And this is just the beginning... Hear more from our Area Operations Manager, Karl Stone in the video below and read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eEZ3ibes #stormoverflow #siteupgrades #sww

We've fixed last year’s highest spilling storm overflow as we continue to reduce our environmental impact using new, targeted solutions. The previous shortage of storage and treatment capacity at our Duloe works near Liskeard meant it would regularly struggle to keep up with the amount of wastewater entering the site. Determined to put it right, our operational and engineering teams designed a solution that would increase treatment capacity and also ensure the site was not overwhelmed during prolonged spells of heavy rain. Karl Stone, our Operations Manager for the area, explains more in this video: https://bit.ly/47R6AQN You can also read more about this work here: https://bit.ly/3Xp869i #WaterIndustry #Innovation #Duloe

To celebrate Inclusion Week, our REACH Network here at South West Water hosted a Cultural Day today in our head office! This was an opportunity for colleagues to come together to honour, celebrate and learn about the many different cultures of our team members. With a delicious buffet of food that the team brought in to showcase and share their heritage, many also came in wearing traditional dress or something that represents their culture 🙌 This was a great event for everyone to come together, share a conversation and learn more about their peers backgrounds. #InclusionWeek #REACHNetwork #CultureDay
