DID YOU KNOW? The history and origins of chambers of commerce in the United States trace back to colonial times. The first chamber of commerce in the U.S. was established in 1768 in New York City. This early formation was driven by the need for a unified voice to represent the interests of business owners, particularly in response to the various trade and tariff issues of the time, including those that played a part in the lead-up to the American Revolution. ¿SABÍAS QUE? Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, chambers of commerce grew in importance and number. They played crucial roles in local, state, and national economic development, including the promotion of trade, the establishment of standard business practices, and the creation of networking opportunities for business owners. They also advocated for legislation favorable to business interests. The concept of a chamber of commerce evolved over time to not only represent the interests of local businesses but also to contribute to the community's overall economic well-being. This includes efforts in areas like tourism, community development, and workforce development. Today, chambers of commerce in the United States are diverse, ranging from small local chambers that focus on the needs of businesses in a particular city or town to large national chambers that represent broader industry interests on a national scale. Their core mission typically remains focused on supporting businesses, economic development, and fostering a favorable business environment in their respective communities or sectors. In 45 short minutes, we covered: 🔹Why consumer sentiment matters so much for Ohio's 2024 economic forecast 🔹 Which jobs are most likely to be eliminated by AI 🔹 How Ohio is "portfolio state," with many smaller economies within the state, and how this relates to regional economic resilience 🔹 What Ohio needs to be doing differently with workforce development 🔹 Top 3 challenges in real estate financing and housing affordability (aka what would be needed to get us back to "normal" affordability of housing) 🔹 Top trends to look out for in 2024 for food and agriculture (this one was me!) I only got to one of the 6 trends I identified when preparing for the panel. So, I'll put all 6 trends into a blog next week!
