Professor Enrico Zio (CRC Mines Paris, Mines Paris, France and Politecnico di Milano, Italy) has just published a SPECIALTY GRAND CHALLENGE article titled "Advancing Nuclear Safety" in the Nuclear Safety section of Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering. The article is about safety in nuclear engineering applications. That's an important topic since safety is a mandatory requirement for nuclear engineering in industrial and medical fields, such as the operation of nuclear power plants, nuclear medical and industrial devices, nuclear propellers, radioactive waste repositories, and more. With a specific focus on nuclear facilities related to energy production, the paper by Professor Enrico Zio provides a number of perspectives on issues and topics in nuclear safety, which are of interest to researchers and practitioners. Nuclear engineering is a field that blends physics, chemistry, and materials science to harness the immense power of atomic nuclei. One of the most fascinating aspects is how nuclear engineers control chain reactions, the process that powers nuclear reactors and atomic bombs. In a reactor, they carefully balance the chain reaction to produce a steady flow of energy, using materials like control rods to absorb excess neutrons. The same principles that can lead to a devastating explosion in an uncontrolled reaction are precisely managed to provide carbon-free electricity for millions. This dual-use nature of nuclear technology, where the same science can be applied for both energy production and weapons, underscores the profound responsibility nuclear engineers carry in ensuring that the power of the atom is used safely and ethically.

The Eth NEST is now actively working to promote the peacefull use of nuclear and radiation technologies for sustainable development. Education in this field has been given less emphasis or seen as complex beyound its nature or irrelevant and thus has been unavailable in the basis of the Ethiopian educational system. The country has now envisioned a nuclear science and technology center; a Nuclear Power Plant and Nuclear and Radiophrmacy Centers Development in its important referal hospitals. The human resource development in these sectors is therefore very critical for a succefull mational nuclear program.

The fourth generation nuclear power technology (Gen IV) has the potential to provide large amounts of energy while leaving significantly less long-lived waste and minimizing the need for new uranium. The Swedish Energy Agency has now granted the largest sum to date, SEK 50 million, for the development of an entire Gen IV nuclear power system. The project, which is coordinated by Christian Ekberg at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers, will also ensure the regrowth of expertise in the nuclear technology science. From Chalmers Physics, Christophe Demaziere, Paolo Vinai and Mattias Thuvander are part of the project. ”One of the contributions from Physics is about the development of monitoring techniques to early detect anomalies in fast reactors. This will be done using neutron noise, i.e., the inherent fluctuations of the neutron density existing in the nuclear fuel assemblies. This technique has the advantage of not disrupting reactor operation and can thus be used online,” says Christophe Demazière. ”The other contribution from Physics concerns materials research. Fast reactors often have corrosive coolants, such as liquid lead or sodium, which pose high demands on the materials to be used. Materials are also affected by the fast neutrons creating damage on the atomic level. Both corrosion and irradiation damage will be studied using electron microscopy and atom probe tomography at Chalmers with cooperation from atomistic modelling at Uppsala University," Mattias Thuvander adds.

This is not a true nuclear renaissance in Denmark unless they also involve fusion and not interim fission. Notice many countries are only extending their fission reactors and not having turned a sod of soil into a fission plant. Makes you think why and that is due to fusion, making these countries cautious in spending on fission.

BREAKING: Denmark establishes Center for Nuclear Energy ☢️ Today the DTU - Technical University of Denmark announced they’re uniting all nuclear energy research in a new interdisciplinary center. This is a true nuclear renaissance, as Denmark once had a nuclear research program at Risø research facility led by Niels Bohr. The new center will be led by senior researcher at DTU, Bent Lauritzen once again at Risø reseach center. The President of DTU, Anders Overgaard Bjarklev expresses his deepest appreciation of the new center in a official press release: "The climate crisis has reached an extent that makes it crucial that we research all technologies that may be relevant in phasing out fossil energy sources. Regardless of whether nuclear power has a future in Denmark, it is important for DTU to have research in the field because we have an obligation to contribute research-based knowledge to society and our students.
