Leveraging the support of private investment and the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET-IP), the current Transmission Development Plan (TDP) for rolling out grid infrastructure in South Africa can be accelerated. The prevailing TDP aims to complete only 1 675 km of overhead lines by 2027. The remaining 14 218 km is proposed for construction from 2028 to 2032, all of which is under the TDP. At least 6 000 km of new overhead lines would be required in the coming three years, despite Eskom’s budget being insufficient to support this. However, the framework allowing the private sector to participate in the construction and operation of new grid infrastructure is expected to be approved soon. The #grid! “There are two critically dependent energy problems soon coming to a head, and the outcome will define not only the economy but the environment for generations. Those are the increasing demand for electricity, which includes continued movement toward renewables and electrification, and the physical infrastructure needed to bring that power to users. As much as a doubling of transmission infrastructure capacity is necessary within the next 20 years, while the average time to complete only a single high-voltage transmission project can currently take up to a decade.”

The Biden administration is set to invest $2.2 billion in eight transformative projects as part of its Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership (GRIP) program, aiming to strengthen the U.S. power grid with nearly 13 GW of new transmission capacity across 18 states. This significant funding, announced on August 6, marks the second round of investments under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) GRIP program, a $10.5 billion initiative established by the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The latest round of funding will not only enhance transmission infrastructure but also catalyze $10 billion in public and private investments, underscoring the administration's commitment to a resilient and modern energy grid capable of meeting the nation's growing electricity demands. National Grid outlines £58bn to upgrade UK’s electricity network The new infrastructure will help the UK meet its decarbonisation targets by 2035. Coming to grids everywhere - Across the UK, council leaders are warning that National Grid does not have enough infrastructure capacity, causing thousands of housing projects to be delayed for years. For renewable-based projects like wind turbines, solar farms, and micro-hydroelectric schemes, the delays are even longer. A new report from NARUC says the U.S. must take steps to build up its interregional transmission infrastructure to meet surging demand for electricity. Kim Riley reports for Daily Energy Insider.   "'Public utility commissions recognize the critical importance of proactively planning our electricity infrastructure to meet evolving demands,' said Andrew French, chairman of the Kansas Corporation Commission and a contributor to the report. 'As our existing grid is forced to respond and adapt to emerging needs, regulators are increasingly interested in assessing how new interregional transmission infrastructure can drive value for customers.'   "The report, French said, provides public utility commissions (PUCs) with a timely assessment of the barriers that are preventing robust interregional transmission planning, including those in planning, permitting, and operational frameworks.
