Merci Yvon. Lemaho Aurélie Tasiemski Fabrice Bertile et Philippe BULET pour ce super article ! #Océan #Biomimétisme #Biomolécule #Biodiversité #Santé "As indicated by the participants of the 2019 #Nobel conference on Bioinspired Medicine in #Stockholm, the main limitation in all countries to investigate wild animals is poor academic funding. Most of the members of academic committees reviewing and selecting grant applications usually are involved in standard research on laboratory animals and are hard to convince of the value of conducting research on “exotic” animals. One reason might be that the #OneHealth concept of a common health denominator is not so widespread. Considering all the projects reviewed in this paper, it took years, sometimes decades, to get an appropriate funding, including for the marine worm project on Arenicola marina which is the most advanced in practical clinical application as indicated above. 🌊 Excited to announce our latest publication: "Effects of temperature and size class on the gut digesta microbiota of the sea urchin Tripneustes ventricosus". 🧬🐚 This work highlights the intricate relationship between marine invertebrates and their microbiota, especially under changing environmental conditions. 🌎✨ Thanks to Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino and Dr. Ruber Rodríguez-Barreras for this opportunity. Key findings: 1️⃣ Seasonal shifts significantly impact gut microbiota, with Bacteroidota dominating in warmer months and Firmicutes thriving in cooler conditions. ❄️☀️ 2️⃣ Size matters! While microbiota composition was relatively stable, smaller urchins exhibited slightly higher bacterial diversity. 📈👨💻 This project stems from a "side adventure" during my PhD, showcasing my passion for environmental microbiology and host-microbiota studies! 🦠 🔗 Dive into the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ep2VvTkt #EnvironmentalMicrobiology #MarineBiology #GutMicrobiota #ScienceSideProjects #Biodiversity

We are excited to share an update on our ongoing project at the University of Padua. As part of the European Reference Genome Atlas initiative, our focus remains on producing a high-quality genome for Chamelea gallina, a species vital to the Italian blue economy and marine biodiversity. 🧪 Recent Milestones: Our team recently collaborated with colleagues from Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise (IZS Teramo) in Teramo to sample Chamelea gallina tissue. This step is crucial for our DNA and RNA extraction processes, paving the way for in-depth genomic analysis. 🔗 ERGA and PLASTICVONG Connection: We are also pleased to highlight that this ERGA subcontract is closely linked to the PLASTICVONG project, led by Federica Di Giacinto, a researcher working at Water Biology Unit of IZS Teramo. PLASTICVONG aims to assess the exposure to microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) related to human consumption of striped venus clam Chamelea gallina. This synergy between our two groups and institutions (federica di giacinto, Paola Venier, Umberto Rosani, Chiara Profico, Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Abruzzo e Molise "G. Caporale") enhances our understanding of environmental impacts on marine life and human well-being. #UNIPD #ERGABGE #Genomics #MarineBiology #Sustainability #IZSTeramo #PLASTICVONG - PLASTICOVNG (codice IZS AM 07/22 RC), funded under the "Ricerca corrente 2022" Program of the Italian Ministry of Health. - ERGA BGE Biodiversity Genomics Europe n°101059492 (BGE, Horizon Europe) European Research Executive Agency (REA), ERGA - European Reference Genome Atlas , Biodiversity Genomics Europe

A very promising field of research to address antibiotic resistance in farming.
Pleased to share that our PhD student, Stavros Droubogiannis, presented our recent research today at the Targeting Phage Therapy conference in Malta. Our work on the resistance development against phage infection by Vibrio harveyi, an important pathogen for aquaculture fish, has provided valuable insights. We showed that while resistance can develop, it comes with a significant fitness cost, resulting in resistant mutants that are less virulent than the original wild type strain. Through genomic analysis, we've gained a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind these resistant phenotypes. This research was supported by the Cure4Aqua project and a travel grant from the journal Pathogens MDPI. We are grateful for the support from our host institution, the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. Thank you to Stavros and the Aquaculture Microbiology Lab team for their hard work. #PhageTherapy #Aquaculture #Research #VibrioHarveyi #GenomicAnalysis #MarineBiology #Cure4Aqua #HellenicCentreForMarineResearch

🎉 Congratulations to the authors Cláudia Aragão (Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR)), Ana Teresa Gonçalves (SPAROS, Lda/GreenCoLab), Benjamin Costas (CIIMAR/ICBAS- Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar), Rita Azeredo (CIIMAR), Maria João Xavier (GreenCoLab), and Sofia Engrola (CCMAR) for receiving the CERTIFICATE 2022 BEST PAPER AWARD from Animals MDPI! 🏆 Their award-winning paper, "Alternative Proteins for Fish Diets: Implications beyond Growth," explores how novel alternative proteins in aquafeed impact animals beyond growth, considering important issues such as their impact on stress response, gut health and its microbiome, and disease resistance. We are happy to be part of the work that binds such relevant information for the scientific community. Novel protein sources in aquafeeds such as algae, insect, or microbial meal have so much more to give! 👉 You can explore more here: https://lnkd.in/dFPchdgw #CCMAR #SPAROS #CIIMAR #ICBAS #GreenCoLab #fishdiets #altprotein

#research 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘇𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗯𝗼𝗮 💡 The #genome sequences of four #novel #Endozoicomonas strains were just published in the #ASM journal Microbiology Resource Announcements. The marine bacteria were isolated from Litophyton sp. soft #corals 🪸 inhabiting the tropical coral exhibition aquarium at Oceanário de Lisboa, collaborating with its curator Núria Baylina and head aquarist Elsa Santos. #Endozoicomonas species are typical coral symbionts and are frequently challenging to cultivate and maintain in the laboratory. The novel strains and genomes are being studied intensively for their roles in corals and marine symbioses. The bacteria are available at Técnico’s MicroEcoEvo Collection and integrated into the Portuguese Blue Biobank (Biobanco Azul Português). The lead authors of the study are Matilde Marques and Daniela Silva, who isolated the strains and analysed their genomes under the guidance of Rodrigo Costa and Tina Keller-Costa. The genomes were sequenced as part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Type Strains (GEBA V) initiative at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (USA) using #PacBio Sequel technology.
