New world record alert! The South American lungfish is now the largest animal genome sequenced to date! Often, people think that the size of the genome of the species is correlated with the size of the species, but it is not as this animal is actually very small. Chromosphaera perkinsii is a single-celled species discovered in 2017 in marine sediments around Hawaii 🌊🦠.   A team led by Omaya Dudin, PhD Dudin, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science | University of Geneva, has observed that the genetic programs responsible for embryonic development were already present before the emergence of animal life, or that this species evolved independently to develop similar processes 🧬. 🌊 Exciting News from the eWHALE Project! 🐋 We are thrilled to share that the first paper of the eWHALE project has been published in Metabarcoding and Metagenomics! 📄 Title: Inter-laboratory ring test for environmental DNA extraction protocols: implications for marine megafauna detection using three novel qPCR assays This study represents a crucial step toward standardizing environmental DNA (eDNA) methodologies for marine biodiversity monitoring. International Microorganism Day on 17 September each year, On this date back in 1683, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek reported the first description of a single-celled organism with his letter to the Royal Society of London. This is an initiative which aims to raise awareness about the importance of microorganisms and microbiology research among the general public and microbe enthusiasts. Robert (Bob) E. Hungate developed methods (the ‘Hungate technique’) to culture anaerobic bacteria and archaea. A recent study by Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN-CSIC), Puerto Real, Spain on the Atlantic croaker's invasion history in Europe marks a significant contribution to understanding non-native fish species' impact on southwestern European waters. Bioer's GeneExplorer Thermal Cycler with its advanced technology facilitated the precise DNA amplification necessary for molecular identification, proving its effectiveness in genetic research. Specifically, GeneExplorer was used for the PCR process, which amplified fragments of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) for molecular identification of the Atlantic croaker. The PCR cycles conducted on the Bioer GeneExplorer thermal cycler ensured precise and accurate DNA amplification necessary for the genetic analysis reported in the study. Restivo is the head of Neuro-Behavioral Analysis Unit (NeuroBAU) at the University of Lausanne, where the Minimal Metadata Set (MNMS) project is running. 𝗠𝗡𝗠𝗦 is an approach supporting an improved and interoperable representation of the raw data already at the source (i.e. at the level of raw data of the single animal). This aims to improve the reproducibility, accessibility and interoperability of nonclinical in-vivo data creating new more ethical and efficient 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀.
