Here’s a suggestion for Network Rail: Save the cost of demolishing the existing bridge by leaving it. And build a new accessible bridge further down the platform for presumably the same cost of the new bridge you are planning to build anyway. Conservation and cost effective. No brainer?

Top-down building construction using the Liftbuild system in Chicago - I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can make construction safer: can we develop a solution that reduces the number of large crane lifts, or can we minimise works within deep excavations or confined spaces, or can we manufacture precast offsite rather than stick-building? Considering high-rise construction, my initial thoughts are “you could never build a high-rise without a tower crane”. Turns out I was wrong! The Exchange tower is a 16 storey building which is being built top-down using the new LIFTbuild system. Each floor is built on ground, and lifted into place. It significantly reduces the fall hazards and work required around suspended loads, and makes it possible to build a high-rise mostly from ground level. Could this be something we see more of in the high-rise construction industry, or perhaps even in other applications? #safety #engineering #safetyinconstruction https://lnkd.in/geKk-2FY

Though Julia Morgan was one of the first licensed #womenarchitects in California and the nation, there are many more today who are front and center and behind the scenes of many projects, #residentialdesign #residentialarchitecture #commercialarchitecture
Born into an affluent San Francisco Bay Area family on this day in 1872, pioneering architect Julia Morgan bucked the traditional path for women of the time by attending UC Berkeley and majoring in civil engineering. She continued her studies at the prestigious, then all-male, École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming the first woman to graduate from the school. She developed a reputation as a go-to architect and by the time she died in 1957, she had designed an estimated 700 buildings, mostly in California, where she was the first woman in the state to be licensed as an architect. Morgan’s groundbreaking career spanned a major earthquake, the Great Depression, and two world wars. Today her legacy continues through her iconic works which include Hearst Castle, the Chinese Historic Society of America, and the Berkeley City Club. Creative Museum, Communications, and Administrative Professional with a Passion for History and the Arts
No matter your own personal family heritage, China Towns and similar cultural districts have been integral parts of the crazy quilt of America, beloved for the rich and colorful traditions, the amazing foods, and the beautiful art, architecture, and aesthetics passed down through generations of artistry, craftsmanship, and traditional cultural practices. These places are important to the beauty and diversity of our cities, and they deserve to be supported, celebrated, and preserved. They are American places and landscapes, American cultural groups and people, and a part of our collective American heritage. Please consider adding your name in support of preservation efforts. The link to the petition is within the following post and supporting article.
National Trust senior director of research and policy, Di Gao, shares how Chinatowns inspired her to learn about urban planning, development, and preservation and how these practices impact the future of ethnic enclaves. Today, Gao leads the National Trust’s America’s Chinatowns initiative, collaborating with and amplifying the work of dedicated local leaders across the country. The historic nature of our main streets is often overlooked and underutilized in the realm of economic development, particularly within the municipal planning world. Historic preservation planning can be a game changer to invigorate rural downtowns and small business communities. And contrary to popular belief, historic preservation planning doesn't mean major restrictions on property redevelopment, down to the paint color of trim. What it is is the creation of a flexible plan to fit the needs of your community, a plan that creates a commitment and belief in the importance of maintaining the character of your community. #mainstreetmatters #downtownplanning #historicpreservation #adaptivereuse #heritagetourism #economicdevelopment #planningiscool

We are currently exhibiting the work that we have been doing in LAND411/2024 course at Worser Bay Lifesaving Club (251 Marine Parade, Seatoun, Wellington). This project has been a fantastic experience. We have been working with many individuals and representatives from more than 20 local community groups, as well as with mana whenua (indigenous people who have historic and territorial rights over the land). We have engaged with them through a series of site visits, lectures, workshops and reviews. The project advocates for the protection and restoration of this exceptional land by proposing an Ecosanctuary and Heritage reserve. Mātai Moana has a rich history as the former site of a Māori settlement, military emplacements, two historic prisons, and a strategic ecological value due to its location in Wellington harbour. It is mostly public land but it has no specific legal protection. As a consequence, it has been at the centre of recent controversy around how it should be transformed. This project aims to contribute to that discussion by proposing an inclusive design process, where different voices and interests have been considered. Designs have been grounded on site knowledge, Mātauranga Māori and community aspirations, considering community efforts as part of a 30-50 years restoration project. Public identity and sense of belonging aim to be achieved through engagement with biodiversity and cultural heritage, integrating into the reserve physically existing heritage, but also removed heritage, intangible heritage, and memories. The feedback received during the exhibitions will be used to develop a final consensus design while facilitating a deliberative process within the local community and mana whenua. This consensus design will go on public display during spring 2024, with the aim to inform the legal process towards land protection and the gradual transformation of the area. In case that you are interested but cannot attend, get a glimpse of the exhibition here ( https://lnkd.in/gigAGpcm ), or watch this video of the different designs ( https://lnkd.in/gVpQAtn2 ). If you are in Wellington, come along this weekend! Saturday 22nd of June from 13.00-16.00 and Sunday 23rd of June from 11.00-16.00.

And may I say, what a fabulous building it is to work in. The sense of light and space is really significant, creating an excellent working environment.
We're honoured that Thames Christian School & Battersea Chapel has won a RIBA London Award for 2024. Our many thanks go to wonderful clients at Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel as well as Taylor Wimpey plc and Wandsworth Borough Council, dedicated collaborators and a fantastic team that made it all possible! The project, sited next to Clapham Junction railway station, brings together the Battersea Chapel Baptist Church and the independent co-educational secondary Thames Christian School. The 6-storey, 5,175m2 building provides the church with a new community hall and sanctuary, and allows the school to expand to 400 pupils, of which nearly half are on the SEN register. The RIBA London jury said that "The architecture of the new building offers stability and permanence in a physical and psychological context that surely welcomes its assured, confident presence and robust materiality. It exudes a rare civic presence, a calm determination and resolve. Anchoring the energy of the neighbourhood, it is marked by finely composed plans and elevations which have resulted in a powerful, sensitively crafted new building." They concluded that "It is the antithesis of an architectural culture which is an extension of the entertainment industry. This is an architecture that explores civic character, exemplified by decorum, quietude and presence, achieved through skill, discipline and material."
