🌊 The future of coastal communities, biodiversity and ocean industries depend on ocean sand. Yet, it is a blind spot on the global sustainability agenda. Neither sand nor dredging is mentioned once in two key documents for sustainable ocean management, according to this report from the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance. “Now is the time to build the scientific knowledge base, holistic understanding, and fit-for-purpose tools to ensure that ocean sand becomes a driver of resilience rather than risks” says Stockholm Resilience Centre researcher Jean-Baptiste Jouffray, lead-author of the report. Thrilled to see this collaborative work on 10 Key components of climate-smart ocean planning published at #npjOceanSustainability! Developed by an amazing team of people, really focused on supporting a sustainable ocean — Tundi Agardy, Larry Crowder, Jon C Day, Malin Pinsky, Amber Himes-Cornell, Julie Reimer, PhD Sara García-Morales, Nathan Bennett, Amanda Lombard, Helena Calado, Marinez Scherer, Wesley Flannery, Lisa Wedding & Elena Gissi. While marine spatial planning #MSP is being developed in over 75 countries all around the globe, to date no ocean plan has integrated #climatechange comprehensively. With this Perspective, we aim to address this challenge and provide marine managers and planners with #guidelines on how to develop climate-smart ocean plans and put them into action. The components are also intended to provide a #checklist to support the assessment and monitoring of the level of ‘climate-smartness’ of existing and future marine spatial planning initiatives! New Article Alert! Our latest article, published in Sustainability Science by Springer Nature, explores the integration of forest restoration and bioeconomy, both crucial in tackling the current climate crisis. In "Current Constraints to Reconcile Tropical Forest Restoration and Bioeconomy", we highlight the challenges and opportunities of multifunctional restoration, which aims to maximize ecosystem services while ensuring economic viability. Supply chains focused on high-value products integrated with payments for ecosystem services can drive tropical forest restoration, delivering both environmental and economic benefits. However, a review of biodiversity-related patents shows a low market interest in native tree species, which are vital for restoration projects. The complexities of this topic involve research, market dynamics, legislation, and distinct public policies, emphasizing the urgency of immediate action. Forest restoration, with its multiple pathways, always aims to restore ecosystem services as a primary goal, but it can also be aligned with economic interests. The term "bioeconomic forest restoration" highlights the importance of preserving standing forests, using native species, and involving local communities, while fostering cooperation between the public and private sectors.
