Today we messed up. One of our trucks dropped off some pallets at the wrong carrier hub. Ouch. Want to know what our CEO Ben Emmrich did about it? Didn't get angry. Didn't blame anyone. Didn't assign tasks/work to people. He got in his car, drove to the facility, repacked the pallets himself, and resolved the issue before it affected the customer. No one on our team knew about the issue before he had his own boots on the ground. He knew any other action would have affected the customer so he took action. How We Turned a Crisis into a Victory in Just 30 Days. In 2019, a sudden request hit our team at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. We had to transition warehouse operations from 8 hours to round-the-clock within one month. The stakes were high, and resources were limited. Challenge: Limited resources Opportunity: Secure long-term customer loyalty How Did We Do It? I seized the opportunity with a bulletproof strategy using the 80/20 rule. By concentrating on 20% of the staff, we prioritized palletized shipments using only 2 docks during the night shift. Recognizing that full capacity isn't always the solution, I optimized the morning shift with the remaining 80% of resources, efficiently operating all docks, particularly for loading dead pallets. I completely agree: a good outcome without a solid process behind it is nothing more than circumstantial “success”. And the long-term results of bad processes will eventually catch up with the organization. By that time, the remediation that needs to be done to fix a festering problem might be economically devastating. Additionally, when Team Members are used to taking short cuts, it’s almost impossible to sell them on doing the right thing. They become habituated to the mediocrity and jaded toward the idea that any improvements will be sustained. This is because many Team Members have put forward improvements only to see them ignored, so they adopt a “#### it” attitude and do the minimum, because they see that the organization doesn’t reward excellence or correct carelessness.
