This is blog #32 as the career guy. And in this blog and the following ones, I will discuss fundamentals to consider in determining the better path to follow concerning technical schools, colleges, and universities. I will embark on my experiences, including my education and working at the University of Calgary. Also, I will incorporate what my guests have shared with me in my podcast regarding this issue from their experiences. In this particular blog, the focus will be on technical schools. The topics I will cover are: the pros and cons of a two-year engineering program, the specifics of a two-year program, apprenticeships and how they work, and continuing education which is sometimes overlooked yet is a great way to experiment. The blog will end with final thoughts in the conclusion. https://lnkd.in/gq6vBpid

Employability Officer at University of Liverpool & Founder of Elephants & Empathy | Aiming to contribute towards best outcomes for Science & Engineering grads | Passionate about supporting people to live their best lives
Thanks Tim Joyce for inviting me to watch some of your #materials #design and #manufacturing #mechanicalengineering, #aerospaceengineering & #civilengineering students' 'Year in Industry' presentations this week. It was very clear to see that they have amplified their chances of #highlevel graduate #employment significantly! Well done to all involved. Some Key Messages from Students: 👀 Making mistakes in the workplace gives you a massive learning curve. 👄 Doing a Year in Industry placement hones your communication skills significantly - you learn how to really talk to people/network and ask questions! Your confidence improves so much and the idea of getting a graduate job seems so much less terrifying. 🥅 Setting goals at the beginning of your placement helps keep you focused on why you're there and what you want to achieve. 🧠 The theory you've learned so far at university starts to make much more sense when you get to apply it in the workplace. Then what you learn in practice in the workplace helps you with the theory in your final year. #winwin 📑 #LinkedInLearning is great for learning #Excel properly, including #shortcuts that save so much time - and it comes in so handy in some placements! Same goes for #softskills courses like 'How to get the most out of your mentoring skills'. 👷♀️ 👷♂️ Get #onsite as much as you can and as soon as you can! You will learn so many things you didn't know you didn't know... 👨🎓 👩🎓 Bright futures ahead for these brilliant students! I am a highly organised person who works well in teams, stressful environments and always strive to perform at my best. I have a deep interest in the construction industry and aim to be a building surveyor.
My employability has changed for the better as the result of doing the course at Newcastle university SCIE2001, Professional Employment skills. This course has been teaching me knowledge and tools required to improve my employability. I chose this course as an elective to help me attain the best job and starting position possible in the construction industry. I also chose it so I can find another part time job before I graduate. SCIE2001 teaches students vital skills to prepare them for once they have graduated and for a students work life if they work while studying. The course also teaches you the resources and tools that are available to us and how we use them to put ourselves out there and available to potential future employers. The work in the course is hands-on and is prepared and designed to engage students in the work. The assessment tasks are designed to teach us about the tools that we can use to promote ourselves when we have graduated and they also allow us to keep our work for future use. It also provides students with useful practice and experience for the future and for other available techniques and practices that help us improve our employability. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is studying at university, as it makes themselves look more employable and also gain an understanding on what employers want and require from us to work in their companies. This course is a great tool that students can use in everyday life that will better them in almost every aspect of their working career. #StudyingSCIE2001 #BScUoN.
