As we embark on the new year, our commitment to safety continues, highlighted by the hosting of two impactful Safe Start meetings that prioritize the well-being of our employees. The first session took place on January 3rd at the Pomeroy Conference Centre in Fort St John, BC, establishing a safety focused tone for the year ahead. Subsequently, on January 4th, a second meeting was held in Grande Prairie, AB, specifically tailored for the STRAIT/IDEAL Coating group. This annual Safe Start tradition serves as a pivotal event, delineating and reinforcing our collective dedication to upholding a safe working environment. This year's events proved particularly enriching, featuring distinguished guest speakers who shared invaluable insights. Corey Hirsch discussed the critical topic of mental health with his presentation "The Save of My Life," while Rick Sikora of Crane Masters discussed rigging safety. Additionally, Mohamed Zayani from CWB enlightened attendees on hydrotesting procedures, and George McGhie from Energy Safety Canada offered his perspectives on human and organizational performance. Vance Whitley contributed insights from the apprenticeship trades in Alberta, and Adele Tait from the Government of Alberta OH&S provided crucial information on investigation resolutions. What would life be like without Tradesmen? You would have no furniture, No air conditioning No computers No TVs No shelter, homes or established businesses No warehouses No freight trucks No plumbing No electricity No ovens, refrigerators, or appliances No buildings or roads, and basically no way to live a modern life. Anyone who works in a skilled trade is absolutely essential for civilized life to continue. Unfortunately for every 3 retired tradesmen in the US, only 1 takes their place. Thankfully, many are becoming wise to this coming crisis by attending trade schools to fill these high-demand jobs, often finding more success sooner than their 4-year college peers. Whether you've been a tradesperson for decades or are just beginning training, we thank you for helping keep our homes, roads, and businesses solid, safe, and reliable; helping everyone work and live more comfortably, efficiently, and productively through your continued dedication to your trade. One of the things Mattox Plumbing has started this year is a quarterly electronic newsletter for our employees. As most of us do not work in the same location, it is a great way to communicate safety, information from the COO, Code Updates and other social event updates. One of the things we have started is an employee spot light. This quarter's employee spot light is Luke Mellor a 4th Year Apprentice. Luke's best advice to someone working in the plumbing industry was, "Don‘t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know what you are doing. Take in all the information from your coworkers with their past experiences.
