🌊What does the ocean mean to you?🌊 For the last few hours of World Ocean Day 2024, let's take a moment to think about the services our blue planet provides for us. For me, completing university on the Cornish coastline meant having a soothing blue haven on my doorstep, to recover from the challenges of university life, to connect with nature, and spend many happy evenings on the beach with friends listening to the sound of the waves. In fact, the ocean is scientifically proven to improve mental health in humans. Looking further afield, in our troubled climate, the ocean takes most of the impact for us. Heatwaves would hit much harder if the sea didn't store as much thermal energy as it does. Tsunamis would be far more damaging if it weren't for coral reefs and mangroves absorbing wave energy. These impacts might be a little hard to imagine, especially if they're far from home. So take a moment to think, what does the ocean offer to you? How do you feel when you're by the sea? Let's keep forging a strong connection between people and the ocean, to celebrate and safeguard our blue planet. #WorldOceanDay

Noisy, destructive off-road vehicles are threatening a fragile population of coastal martens in Oregon. Will you take a few seconds to help these shy carnivores? Only about 400 coastal martens remain on Earth, with about 70 of them living in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Despite the risks to martens, every summer the U.S. Forest Service allows thousands of off-road vehicles in their dunes habitat. The dangers are highest during large riding events, which the Forest Service still welcomes to the Oregon Dunes. Even worse, the Forest Service is poised to allow even *more* of these events this year. Take action: Tell the Forest Service to stop letting off-road vehicle events imperil rare coastal martens. We'll make sure they get your comment. https://bit.ly/3WvIXtd

🌄 The federal government recently announced plans to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Advocacy from Indigenous community leaders, community activists, and environmentalists across Southern California led to this landmark decision to preserve public land and provide critical open space and equitable access to nature. 🚵♀️Expanding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument will promote equitable access to nature, safeguard a vital water source for Los Angeles County, tackle climate and biodiversity challenges, support national 30x30 goals, and honor the landscape’s culture and historical significance. 🙌 Alongside the Monument’s expansion, over $1 million in corporate, philanthropic, and state government support to ensure equitable access and recreation within the Monument was announced, a commitment that includes support from EGA member, Resources Legacy Fund. 🎉 Today is our 17th birthday! As the only nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, restoring, and expanding America’s National Conservation Lands, we're so grateful for your ongoing support. National Conservation Lands are among the most essential and spectacular natural, cultural, and archaeological places in the country. They include National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails. Here’s how we protect, restore, and expand National Conservation Lands: 🏞️ We harness community passion through our Friends Grassroots Network, which includes over 80 local groups that advocate for National Conservation Lands. 🌻 We secure protections and improve policies by working with presidential administrations, Congress, and the Bureau of Land Management. 🌿 We increase public support by generating greater visibility and funding for enduring protections. As we continue our efforts, join us in safeguarding millions of acres in the U.S. for future generations: visit conservationlands.org. #ProtectWhatMatters #Conservation #PublicLands #NationalConservationLands
