What are the world's biggest scientific breakthroughs in Earth system science in 2024? 🌏 23 National Champions from 23 countries will be announced next Monday, on Earth Day, 22 April 2024. Three International Champions, chosen by a jury of 100 leading experts, will be awarded with a prize of one million Swiss francs each to support their continuing research on planetary boundary science. UMN Professors Susan Wolf, JD, Chair of the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences, and John Bischof, Director of Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-Bio), are among authors of a new study, published in BioScience, proposing a plan that could safeguard Earth’s endangered biodiversity through storage on the Moon at extremely low temperature. The study led by the Smithsonian Institution outlines a roadmap for the creation of a lunar biorepository. The paper proposes an approach for governance, the types of biological material to be stored, and a plan for experiments to address challenges like radiation and microgravity. https://lnkd.in/gHum2mwc

🆕 Researchers propose new approach to #GlobalCommons as a tool for safeguarding critical Earth system functions in a new paper published in PNAS. Legal, political and Earth system scientists advocate for “the planetary commons” concept. 📜 This expands on the legal definition of global commons by adding not only globally shared geographic regions, but also the biophysical systems that regulate the resilience and state – and therefore livability – of Earth. This new broader definition is aligned with the concept that the commons are critical to supporting life on Earth and that we all depend on them. 🌱 🌏 The proposal aims to enhance legal responses for governing these systems beyond national boundaries. We are chairing session 44 on Cutting Edge Antarctic Research with Daniela Liggett, Jilda Caccavo and my Ocean Visions colleague Kerry Nickols, Ph.D.. Check the description below and consider submitting an abstract if you are working on some innovative ideas to reverse or repair climate induced polar losses. The conference will take place in Pucón, Chile, on August 19-23, 2024. "This session will explore new approaches to Antarctic research, including novel ontologies, epistemologies and methodologies as well as new ways of working in general, with a especial emphasis on solutions to reverse and repair climate induced losses in Antarctica. Opportunities and challenges in relation to the production as well as communities of cutting-edge Antarctic research will be discussed, and case studies of ambitious research designs or approaches will be featured. We invite presentations and posters that address any of the above or that highlight interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary work, or involve novel ways of presenting, sharing or communicating research results.
