We celebrated an incredible International Youth Day on August 12! 👦🏼🧒🏽👧🏿🌍 Our panelists shared valuable insights on the role of youth in peace and security. Here’s a thought-provoking quote from Saji Prelis when we posed the question: How urgent and necessary is it to include youth in peace and security for sustainable development? 🕊️🌱 "Current solutions are failing, and the existing systems do not meet people's present needs and are unfit for the future. As a result, we require an all-of-society approach. With the median age in Africa being just 19, we need a human-centered approach that prioritizes youth. It’s also essential to recognize that young people are already on the frontlines, engaging in promising and constructive initiatives that not only serve their own interests but also address the needs of society as a whole." ❌🧒🌟 Want to stay updated on our upcoming events? Working with a 20th century mindset using 19th century infrastructure trying to address 21st century needs We need a change
Our International Youth Day celebration was truly inspiring! 👦🏼🧒🏽👧🏿🌍 Our panelists shared insightful perspectives on the critical role of youth in peace and security. One powerful quote from our discussion comes from Amjad Mohamed Saleem (PhD), who addressed the question: How urgent and necessary is it to include youth in peace and security for sustainable development? 🕊️🌱 "We are living in a time when the majority of our work relies on a nineteenth-century infrastructure and a twentieth-century mindset while attempting to address twenty-first-century needs. This calls for a fundamental change in our systems! There is a strong desire for change and innovative ideas emerging; around the world, we have witnessed young people actively striving to make a difference." 🇺🇳🔄💡 Want to stay updated on our upcoming events? Highlight from Our International Youth Day Virtual Dialogue 🗣️ During our recent YTN Virtual Dialogue "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Inclusion in Peace and Security for Sustainable Development," our inspiring speaker, Wevyn Muganda, shed light on the pressing obstacles young people face in peacebuilding efforts. 🕊️ "As a young peacebuilder, I see three major challenges. First, competing life priorities: many young people struggle with underemployment, unemployment, or lack of opportunities, making it hard to choose between survival and participation in peacebuilding. Second, traditional engagement methods are outdated and often fail to resonate with today’s youth. Young people are looking for new, more relevant ways to be involved, but these are not widely available or embraced. Lastly, there's a deep mistrust between youth and key institutions, from civil society to the private sector. This mistrust undermines the effectiveness of peacebuilding processes and discourages engagement." 💵🗳️🔎 Wevyn also emphasized the specific struggles of young peacebuilders, noting the chronic underfunding of youth-led peace initiatives, which forces many to rely on personal and family resources—an unsustainable model. 📉 Join our movement to dive deeper into these issues and explore how we can overcome these barriers together! 🫱🏼🫲🏾🌟 Follow us on our social media: 🌁 Instagram: @yt.narratives 📱 Facebook: Youth Transforming Narratives - YTN 🌐 Website: https://buff.ly/3StheXt #YouthInclusion #PeaceAndSecurity #YouthDay2024 #YouthLeadership #SustainableDevelopment #YTN

A youth-led nongovernmental organization. Positive Peace|Human Rights|Good Governance|Quality Education
We celebrated the 24th International Youth Day yesterday to reflect on young people's challenges and recognise their significant impact worldwide. In continuation of that deserved recognition, this post is dedicated to honouring the resilience, passion, and grit of our youth ambassadors and volunteers towards peacebuilding and development across varied Nigeria communities and in the diaspora, and also to the innumerable youth peacebuilders and changemakers who contribute to making our world a better place. Young people globally work, often unnoticed, in diverse areas such as climate change, peacebuilding, human rights, education, equality and inclusion, and security, among others, leveraging technology and digital innovations more than ever. Nevertheless, the challenges facing the youth are numerous, which is why this season is important – to reflect on what is going on in the youth world and give necessary support to advance their voice. While we look inward to encourage ourselves as a youth-led organisation to keep up our excellent work, we also extend similar encouragement to every youth and youth-led organisation to never give up on transforming our world positively. Our world needs all hands on deck; we need you to survive, young people. Keep leveraging digital innovation for sustainable peace and development. You matter, youth. #youthcelebration #digitalinnovation #progress #sdgs

Youth Opportunities and myself would like to wish South Africa a Happy Youth Day! Today, on June 16th, we celebrate South Africa’s National Youth Day. This day holds immense significance, commemorating the Soweto Uprising of 1976, where brave young people stood up for their right to education and a better future. It is their courage and sacrifice that paved the way for a more just and equitable South Africa and now, as we reflect on the past, I urge everyone to remember the unwavering spirit of those young heroes and to let their stories inspire us to create a future where all young South Africans have the opportunity to thrive. Let us also remember that today’s youth face a different set of challenges - unemployment, access to quality education, and mental health concerns, to name a few. We need to empower them with the resources and support they need to overcome these hurdles and become the leaders of tomorrow. Here’s how we can all contribute: • Amplify youth voices: Let us actively listen to the needs and aspirations of young people. Support youth-led initiatives and provide them with platforms to express themselves. • Invest in education and skills development: Equipping young people with the right skills is crucial for their success. Let us advocate for quality education and accessible training programs. • Promote mental health awareness: Let us break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a safe space for young people to seek help. To the young people of South Africa: Your spirit, resilience, and innovation are the driving force behind our nation’s progress. Dream big, challenge the status quo, and never stop striving for a better future. #June16 #HappyYouthDay #SowetoUprising1976 #NationalYouthDay #YouthOpportunities

It was fantastic to attend the Global Gateway High-Level Youth Event from the European Commission Directorate-General for International Partnerships last week. The event aimed to engage, empower, and connect young people and youth networks from across the world, and did just that. In showcasing the power of youth involvement, we saw the progress that has been made in making meaningful youth engagement a reality. Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen's work on creating structures of youth participation globally is so appreciated, and I hope this work is continued and strengthened by her successor. The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs Felipe Paullier Olivera also affirmed the importance of institutionalisation of youth involvement. Panel discussions allowed space to discuss how youth can be part of the solution to the biggest problems of our time: on peace, human rights abuses, the climate crisis, and putting an end to extreme poverty. It was good to hear from multiple speakers that youth are not just "the future", as we are often told, but the present too - we want to be part of the solution - only with meaningful, systemic youth participation can we be. The many inspiring young people I met and heard from at the event are testament to that principle. Hearing stories and lived experience from all over the world really shows the power that youth have in shaping the world, in making it a fairer, more just place, and how willing we are to do so. There is still much work to be done on youth involvement and I hope that the European Union, national governments, and organisations will further youth engagement to recognise and harness the experience, knowledge, and expertise of young people. #GlobalGateway #YouthActionPlan #YouthLeadsTheWay

As we reflect on celebrating Youth Day in South Africa, it's crucial to recognize the progress we have made and the challenges that still lie ahead.
