A quick thought - How could Game Boy cartridge games improve today’s product design? Back in the golden age of gaming, cartridge games were incredibly intuitive and a breeze to change. You knew that loading the Pokemon cartridge would allow you to play the Pokemon game. It was as easy as that. Fast forward to today’s product market, we’re met with a stark contrast. We see that hardware in our everyday things is practically impossible to change, and what it isn’t impossible is far from intuitive. If the heater element in your toaster breaks, the chances are you’re buying a new one. But what if we could bring the simplicity of cartridge games to your toaster or hairdryer, laptop or TV? If something breaks, you could have a new cartridge shipped to your doorstep and immediately load it yourself. With this approach, we not only simplify the act of repair and make the process more user-centred, but at the end of the day, the material and resource investment to make the thing in the first place hasn’t gone to waste. #industrialdesign #sustainabledesign #repair #usercentereddesign

Nintendo’s first US commercial might be this 1980 ad https://lnkd.in/esSE2GEP Nintendo is a gaming juggernaut today, but it wasn’t really on anyone’s radar in the United States in 1980. And what was possibly the first US commercial for hardware produced by the company — a handheld called Toss-Up, from its “Game & Watch” series — certainly didn’t help, as a newly-restored copy shows. That’s because there’s no mention of Nintendo at all, or even Game & Watch. Game & Watch games were simplistic standalone handheld LCD games not unlike the cheap licensed Tiger Electronics games seemingly every kid had in the 1990s. And in the US, those games were initially licensed to a company called Mego (pronounced “mee-go”), and sold as a series called “Time-Out” instead, according to The Video Game History Foundation in a blog... SPECIAL DOSE OF VIDEO GAME HISTORY 📢📢📢 Sorry for all the megaphone yelling. My parents were strong union activists so it probably runs in my blood. Anybody remember ads like this? This blew my nostalgia through the roof! For good and bad. Let’s look at some key data on this ad. Low prices/sales prices for n64 games were 60 bucks IN THE 1990s!!! Now, obviously a big part of the answer here is some strategic framing for the consumer to feel that they’re getting a better deal than they are, but it puts stuff into perspective. Like the fact that Nintendo games haven’t gone up in price in almost 30 years. That’s insane! I forgot how expensive the N64 and nintendo console gaming in general was in that specific generation. Gamecube did much better in this regard. What other key info can we analyze here? Well, both the early days of unnecessary non playable accesories for your consoles (in this case, the carrying case for the N64), and the early origins of the “Nintendo games almost never drop in price” rule. Not a major learning point, just some fun nostalgia! Hoping everyone is wrapping up their weekend the right way! :)

Game 🎯 Time Nintendo will launch a new game console this year with an 8-inch LCD screen, according to Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase. The new device from the Kyoto-based games maker will be responsible for a doubling in shipments of so-called amusement displays in 2024, Hayase said. His research focuses on small and medium displays and he bases annual forecasts on checks with companies in the supply chain. The company has been tight-lipped about any potential successor, but expectations have narrowed to this year’s holiday period for the release of the next generation.
