All women, including those who are incarcerated, deserve to have skillful, supportive, and effective maternal healthcare. Women in prison are at greater risk for maternal mortality and severe morbidity. The Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act aims to address this issue. Wisconsin lawmakers are considering a bill to restrict the shackling of pregnant women in state correctional facilities. This is a positive step forward in protecting the health and well-being of incarcerated women and their unborn children. The article highlights the dangers of shackling pregnant women, including: Increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and other complications Physical and emotional distress Difficulty accessing prenatal care and other medical services Jasti & Khandhar stands firmly against the shackling of pregnant women. We believe that all people, regardless of their incarceration status, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We urge lawmakers to pass this bill and ensure that pregnant women in Wisconsin have access to the care they need. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gM3Na4iV #JastiKhandhar #LawyersYouCanTrust #LegalSupport #JAndKLawyers #CriminalDefense #JKLawyers #Wisconsin #CriminalJustice #Madison #JusticeSystem #LawyersOfInstagram #Lawyers #Attorneys #AttorneyAtLaw #Blogger #WomenIncarcerated #Pregnant #PregnantAndIncarcerated #WisconsinLaw

Pregnancy and pregnancy loss in Prison I’ve been researching for a piece of work the realities faced by pregnant women in prison. This is a new area for me, having previously focused on working with men and the stories of first hand experiences and statistics are deeply upsetting. I'm encouraged by the recent review of sentencing guidelines, which now consider pregnancy as a higher mitigating factor when deciding on custodial sentences. This seems to be a step forward. There seems to be a severe shortage of places in mother and baby units, leaving many without the essential support they need. For people who know much more about this area than me, who are the organisations / services I should be following that are doing good work in this space and what is next in this area to ensure the necessary care and support is in place? #PrisonReform #WomensRights #MaternalHealth #CriminalJustice

Student at the University of Arkansas | Aspiring Orthopaedic Surgeon | STL CAPS Alumni-Medicine, Healthcare, Bioscience
My passion project brings light to a topic not spoken about enough; eliminating the racial disparities that create the infant mortality rate gap. Racial disparities like poor quality housing, inaccessible healthcare, costly insurance, and many more effect the mortality rate of a baby. These disparities increase the Black infant mortality rate by causing pregnancy complications, birth defects/conditions, pre-term birth, and more. It is important to spread awareness about this preventable issue that affects millions of Black families. Some individuals aren’t aware of how huge this gap has become. I challenge you to tell a friend, family member, or even a stranger about this problem to raise awareness and educate your peers! With 11 states and the District of Columbia now enabling medical aid in dying (#MAID), the options for Americans with a terminal disease have now become much broader and more accessible. Candid, advanced conversations about #dying have now taken on new importance, not only for patients and healthcare professionals, but for #healthcare #surrogates, who may be called upon to aggressively represent the wishes of their spouse, partner, family member, friend or client. Many hospitals, senior living centers and even hospice organizations have policies that #won't #honor #patient #decisions in this regard. What is even more challenging, those policies are #not #disclosed #publicly. In many communities, there are no local options. Thus, patients and surrogates need far more information before choosing doctors, hospitals and senior living centers. Later this year, these issues will be aired in a remarkably candid, online forum called #The #Healthcare #Surrogate #You #Wish #You #Had.
