EU Missions – five paths to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges ⭐️🇪🇺 The EU Missions – Adaptation to Climate Change; Cancer; Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030; Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities; A Soil Deal for Europe – aim to address some of the greatest challenges facing our society. They are bold and inspirational with clear objectives that are time-bound, realistic, measurable and targeted. Many of the calls from the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2025 are still open for submissions. Especially intriguing is the New European Bauhaus, a pathway leveraging the power of culture, art and creativity for the green transition, and the cross cutting activities, which is a response to new needs or opportunities and aim to experiment with new approaches 🤩 Last month, the European Commission held information events for the EU Missions and cross-cutting activities, to inform about the new topics included in the EU Missions and Cross-cutting Activities work programme 2024. Did you miss it? Don't worry, you can rewatch them all! Find them on the European Commission research and innovation platform, link in the comments. 😱 ARE WE FACING A COLLAPSE OF INDUSTRIAL CONSUMER GOODS SOCIETY? 🤔 "What can the private sector do to soften the blow from the collapse of modern industrial consumer goods societies due to #climatechange?" This is how Jem Bendell, founder of the The Deep Adaptation Forum, summarises the question he will discuss at The Shift - 1st Corporate Climate Adaptation Conference (Nov 6th) in Berlin. A provocative statement, but not nearly as far-fetched as you might initially think... His excellent book “Breaking Together” lays out a very solid, multidisciplinary and well-researched basis for his views on impending collapse. He also doesn't stop at 'just' analysing this collapse, but also goes beyond to discuss what real adaptation in light of this collapse could and should entail. Recent research by the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, while looking less at the 'beyond collapse' question, certainly can be seen to support Jem's diagnosis of the systemic deterioration we are experiencing. I look forward to seeing Stefan Rahmstorf from PIK and Jem Bendell discussing these topics on stage in Berlin on the 6th of November, together with many other folks committed to advancing the adaptation agenda. By the way: For those who are working on their first #CSRD report, bear in mind that #ESRS E1 also requires you to look at physical risks and adaptation measures... For most companies, it'll be rather hard to argue, that the consequences of climate change do not result in material risks for your business. The Shift is the place to go if you're not yet sure what you'll do and say here yet... Further information on this first adaptation conference: https://lnkd.in/dFiZG-dY
Despite international agreements, the world is on a worrying trajectory, with six of nine planetary boundaries being transgressed and a seventh on the verge, states new PIK science. Reflecting on the UN’s #SummitForTheFuture, PIK director Johan Rockström and co-president of The Club of Rome Sandrine Dixson-Declève warn that systemic change is needed now.
