Last week, FXCollaborative joined forces with the New York Housing Conference and more than 100 pro-housing organizations to urge the NYC Council to say #YestoHousing by supporting the NYC Department of City Planning (DCP) #CityofYes for Housing Opportunity agenda. In a letter to Speaker Adams, the #YestoHousing Coalition called for comprehensive, citywide solutions to address NYC’s severe housing and affordability crisis. At a moment when nearly 500,000 NYC households spend more than 50% of their income on rent, the #CityofYes proposal is an unprecedented opportunity to remove unnecessary barriers to housing production and increase affordability across the city. We’re committed to working closely with leaders in government and community members to ensure the final text amendment delivers necessary housing reforms on behalf of New Yorkers. Producing new housing has to be a "shared responsibility," said New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams at the NYU Furman Center's Policy Breakfast last week. New York City official are hopeful that two new packages of laws—the City Council’s Fair Housing Framework and Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan—will work in tandem to fairly and equitably produce new housing across the city and ensure every single neighborhood contributes to solving the city’s acute housing crisis. "We have to normalize a shared responsibility of addressing the housing crisis across all neighborhoods and establish clear expectations and targets that are localized and transparent to all of us,” said Speaker Adams during the panel. “We’re all in this together.” Read NYU Furman Center's Benjamin Hitchcock, Shannon Flores, and Elizabeth (Nikki) Miller story https://lnkd.in/gftuNj65 #newyorkcity #housing #affordablehousing #equity #fairhousing #housingcrisis

The draft is out for public comment and public open houses have been scheduled. There's a lot to digest - no doubt - but this should be a very exciting and engaging conversation on how to support the success of #Seattle. #urbandevelopment #affordablehousing #equitydiversityinclusion #resilientcommunities

The One Seattle Comprehensive Plan has set out with lofty goals—goals which, as a developer deeply invested in this city's future, I share. However, to realize the vision of affordability, we must confront the elephant in the room - the unreasonably high costs and red tape that developers face in Seattle. We're tasked with updating aging sewer, water, sidewalk infrastructure and trees, navigating a maze of inspections and permits, and contending with the arbitrary interpretations of inexperienced inspectors. The MHA fees alone are a formidable barrier to affordability. On top of this, developers find little support in managing unauthorized occupants, facing both fines and potential loss of property rights. We can't afford to ignore these issues if we're serious about building a Seattle that's accessible to all. Let's roll up our sleeves and address the real costs of development, so our city can thrive without passing undue burdens onto those we aim to house.

“Lies, damned lies, and statistics” is a quote attributed to Mark Twain. It comes to mind as Philadelphia challenges the usefulness of AMI for defining housing affordability in their city. https://lnkd.in/exZ7upcW #affordablehousing #affordablehousingfinance #communityimpact

Housing remains a privilege, not a right, 80 years after FDR’s call-to-action, writes Kara Young Ponder, PhD. The U.S. housing system’s stringent requirements and lengthy waits for public housing exacerbate homelessness. But, systems that acknowledge housing as a human right are making great progress. Houston has reduced homelessness by 64% using a #HousingFirst model. Countries like Finland, Austria, South Africa, and Scotland have also made strides, showcasing models that guarantee housing rights, promote affordable housing, and strengthen tenant protections. We can learn from these successful models and #EndHomelessness in the US. Read more in this insightful piece published by Chicago Sun-Times. #HousingAccess #TenantProtections

Public review for #CityofYes for Housing Opportunity is officially underway! That means we’re one step closer to tackling our housing crisis by creating a little more housing across the city. Here’s what comes next: The NYC Department of City Planning team will bring the proposal to Community Boards, Borough Boards and Borough Presidents across the city for input and review. It then goes to the City Planning Commission. If passed, the City Council is anticipated to vote by late 2024. The stakes couldn’t be higher: we’re facing a generational housing shortage that we need to tackle together. If every neighborhood builds a little more housing, it can make a big difference citywide! Let's make it happen.
