To say that we're excited about the Bethune Gardens NYCHA PACT Project in Washington Heights is an understatement. These gardens are named after African American Educator Mary McLeod Bethune and our design seeks to honor her legacy. Quotes from her are embedded in a flush stone curb that encircles a central gathering space and spaces shaped to mimic a warm embrace. Look for updates to come as installation progresses. Darby Curtis attended this wonderful event honoring the great work of the Osborne Association, and the opening of the Fulton Community Reentry Center.

C+GA’s Director of Sustainability Crystal Ng spent the past year as a Rewire Fellow in the Urban Design Forum’s Green Homes working group! The result: Five Visions for Building Climate Positive Neighborhoods, a publication that compiles research, case studies, policy recommendations, and pilot ideas from 48 civic leaders, offering a blueprint to transform NYC’s built environment into an engine for climate action. The Green Homes team—a dedicated group of planners, advocates, architects, and engineers—devoted their time to understanding the barriers to decarbonizing small-scale housing stock and developing innovative ideas to accelerate decarbonization efforts, while improving resident health. Their efforts culminated last week at the Rewire Ideas Launch & Conversation, where the Fellows presented and discussed their ideas with policy makers, practitioners, government officials, and utility providers. The collaborative discussion focused on strategies to create resilient communities, decarbonize our small-scale housing stock, and create healthier living environments for NYC communities by empowering neighborhood organizations to scale energy retrofits. We were excited to host a ribbon-cutting event for Apex Place Apartments, a Phipps Houses’ affordable housing development in Forest Hills, Queens! A huge thank you to our amazing partners FXCollaborative and Curtis + Ginsberg Architects for your dedication, support, and collaboration in helping us create a project that has made a lasting impact on our community! We also want to thank Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, New York City Council member James F. Gennaro and Queens Community Board 6 for coming out and supporting the event. We also had the opportunity to honor the legacy of Joseph Hennessey, former Forest Hills MHA President and Queens Community Board 6 Chair, in recognition of his dedicated service to the community.

This Thursday 10/24, Partner Mark Ginsberg will speak at the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association BuildingEnergy NYC conference at a panel co-chaired by our Director of Sustainability Crystal Ng. “Beyond Passive House: Emerging Research from NYSERDA BoE Early Phase Funding” will showcase three affordable Passive House multi-family projects, highlighting the opportunities and challenges in pursuing zero carbon buildings. Mark will present C+GA’s ongoing research on the embodied carbon strategies at Shore Hill, a building designed to Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, and WELL Building standards.
